If the U.S. creates a lot of damage to the civilian population, he's now on record tying himself to the campaign.
The obvious question is why would the U.S. go to war here? The cynical answer is that, like many conflicts in the past, you have a politician in power that is increasingly unpopular, and he needs to wag the dog and change the story. Another answer is that after Trump's long string of failures with Iran, he's left with large-scale military operations as the only way to solve a problem he created when he pulled out of the original deal. Another is that he's carrying out long-time establishment goals by trying to realign Iran with the West, the one reason that isn't present, an imminent risk to the U.S.
