Chapter 1: What is the significance of starting each day with a list?

0.031 - 26.924 Scott Becker

This is Scott Becker with the Becker Business and the Becker Private Equity Podcast. Today's discussion is a simple one. It's start every day with a list. So the concept is that I have many days where I start the day with an intentionality and a list of here's what I want to get done today. Here's what's on my calendar. Here's what I need to do. Here's what's important. Here's what's not.

There are other days. And today... Well, this will come out tomorrow, but today has been a perfect example of one of those other days. And I feel bad for the people that I work with on those days because they see it up front and personal and close.

Chapter 2: How can a lack of planning affect daily productivity?

43.704 - 62.185 Scott Becker

But it's one of those days where I didn't start the day with the list. I got out of the house a little bit later than I expected to. I was able to get the first thing I had to do, which is something for Becker's Healthcare done and done well early this morning. But I didn't have clarity about the rest of the day and what I needed to accomplish.

And that leads to a situation where the day becomes an extremely frenzied and hurried day. I'm trying to interview somebody on one spot for a job as we're trying to build a sales team at Becker Business. I'm trying to do a number of podcasts for mostly Becker's Healthcare. I show up to a couple of the podcasts a few minutes late. My producer is like, what is wrong with you?

85.06 - 107.425 Scott Becker

I'm frazzled during one of the interviews we have to do where I'm interviewing a person and I'm so frazzled, I'm seeing other things on my list that I'm not able to pay attention as well as I should be able to pay attention. And this goes on and on throughout the course of the day. largely because I didn't make the effort to early on in the day put together a list of what I have to do that day.

So today's lesson, and this is true of people that have the level of sort of attention deficit disorder and caffeine intake that I have, but it's really true for everybody. You really want to start the day with intentionality and clarity about what you're trying to accomplish versus jumping from thing to thing with an amount of frazzlement and frazzled energy that's unhealthy for anybody.

I remember Jamie Dimon has this great YouTube speech or this great take where he talks about the world can be frantic or frenzied, but what you don't have control over the world, what you have is control over you.

143.479 - 162.974 Scott Becker

And so the goal is to make yourself less frantic and more frenetic and more focused and more intentional. And that goes to starting the day with a list versus just frazzledly running throughout the day, which is one of those days I've had in large part today. Thank you for listening to the Becker Business Podcast, the Becker Private Equity Podcast. We hope this is helpful to somebody.

163.014 - 168.328 Scott Becker

I've been struggling today, but we hope that you benefit from my errors. Thank you for listening.
