Welcome to the latest episode of Accidental Business Owners. Each episode is a live coaching session. We're joined by our business and mindset coach Dai Foster and we unpack the realities of running our own business. This one is a little bit different. We opened the episode, but then we left. Yeah, Marketing Marcus is in the hot seat in this one. It's a one-on-one with Dai where she unpacks his growth journey. He was a one-man business. Now he has a team of 10 that he's built across the last.

Brrrrr.
How did Marcus go from a one‑person operation to a 10‑person agency?
Morning boys. I thought we banned. I thought we banned.
Those noises are only banned if you've got the headphones on. If you've got the headphones on, it exacerbates it.
But chilly this morning.
Let's start with the weather chill. Hey, we are back with Marketing Marcus. And uh we're actually gonna leave you two alone, Die. You and and Marcus, you're gonna pick apart his his world. But first, I just wanted to set uh paint paint
a little picture. Second first in a row factor business, isn't it? Isn't it? Last episode, easy for me to say. Last episode we had four. This episode there's only gonna be two, and neither you nor I are gonna be in one for the first time. Yeah
breaking new ground. Oh
new ground. Experimenting. Yeah.
Uh so if you haven't listened to the last episode with Marcus, go and check it out. But just to sort of bring you up to speed, uh he has been doing our marketing for us for about the last three and a half, four years. And at the time, Seamus and I were doing the podcast part-time. I was working at the Herald, Shay had a number of various jobs. We had about, I think, 2,000 social media followers between us on our individual platforms. We were trying to build build our Between two bears and we kind of thought we could do it ourselves. And then Shay said, I used to work with this guy Marcus. I think he would be good for us. Let's have a meeting. So we had a meeting with Marcus in the NZME building and it was it blew us away.
It was ex- I remember thinking it was really expensive and we couldn't afford it. But do you remember that? Yeah.
I still think they'd even match.
But uh he he devised a strategy and he showed us a roadmap for how we were gonna build all of our social games.
Remember it was ten K? Remember that was the that was the validation point? Oh, getting to
ten K followers.
Yep, yeah. And that used to be like the the matrix shine KPI that I would hold over your head all the time.
So he did. And and it's he's been instrumental in uh the growth of our business. Now we have 250,000-ish followers across all of our channels. We built them all up at the same time, but he's also been a huge part of working through the show with us, bringing it to life across different platforms. Uh one of the coolest things was at the last radio and podcast award, so not this year but the last year, it was the three of us sitting together. Do you remember that? And then you left early. Yeah. Yeah. Remember we didn't win, you were spuming. And then you and I had giggle fits around the sheets. Um but this year, between us, I think there was fifteen. Mm-hmm. We had a team of eight and you had a team of nine.
You've now got a team of ten. Uh so just a a real sort of snapshot of the growth. So uh yeah, I think that's kind of like paints the picture. Me and Shay are gonna leave now. Die you can sort of pick away and figure out how you Christians. You got questions? Yeah. Anything
anything you want to say, Shay? No, it's just nice having you back in Hamilton. Um that thing where you ask me is there anything to say and I say no and then say something. But no, yeah, I think you should move back to Hamilton. Yeah. I had really good times working with Marcus in our in our former life and uh it's always
based on so for what I've seen this morning, I don't think you should move back to Hamilton.
