Who is Jason Gunn and why is this episode re-released?
This week on Between Two Beers, we're re-releasing one of our favourite eps of all time, our chat with Jason Gunn from 2024. Jason is one of New Zealand's most loved entertainers and is the best storyteller we've had on the podcast. We talk about the incredible rise of the son of a gun show, what people get wrong about thingy, life in the public eye, McDonald's young entertainers dancing with the stars, Sideline Jace and the art of storytelling. And in the second half, we talk about his heart attack, thoughts on mortality, family and the loss of his mum. There are some incredibly special emotional moments of connection. Jase is one of a kind. When he walks into a room, he makes it a better place.
For Seamus and I, we grew up watching him every day after school, and so to share his life story with so much depth was a really cool experience for both of us. You'll love this one. Between Two Bears is proudly brought to you by One New Zealand. We believe that One New Zealand connects New Zealand, while Between Two Bears connects New Zealanders, and together we are New Zealand's most trusted connection platform. Between Two Bears is also supported by TAB. Keen for more action on sports and racing? Download the TAB app or visit tab.co.nz to get your bet on. R18, bet responsibly. And Seamus and I are also proud to be dressed by Barkers. Check out their range at barkersonline.co.nz. Enjoy. Jason Gunn. Wow.
Welcome to Between Two Bears.
This is special. This is a real treat to be here, guys. I really mean that.
There's a real good energy since you've stepped into our office and studio. And you have cancelled a massage to be here today. And that's big news.
No, I want you guys to see that for what it is. Like, massage. Who doesn't like that? But wait a minute. Who doesn't love this? Okay? So that's on hold. Others would have put you on hold, not me. Not you. No way. That's the calibre of the bloke.
In my notes at the start is Jason Gunn. It's one of those names that you say the whole thing, isn't it? Do you always get Jason Gunn? I honestly do.
I say to people, hey, Jason's fine. Jason, if we're going to be really formal. But Jason Gunn is like, oh, wow, we're in trouble here. Either mum or the teacher. But yeah, I guess... I guess it's like a brand though, isn't it? That's the kind of people know you as that, which I'm very humbled by. But equally, the sooner we can get from Jason Gunn to Jase, the better.
The brand is strong. And I'll put you in with Rachel Hunter in terms of when we tell people we had someone coming on the show, it's a real head turner. Jason Gunn. Everyone is excited for Jason Gunn.
That is so kind of you. I've... It's a good point. Well made. Well, I feel remarkably distant from Rachel. I mean, she's international supermodel. I see some, obviously, some connection. But no, that's, look, she's another level altogether. Another league.
Yeah. Hey, we have been fizzing for this episode. We met you a few months ago at the Tall Poppy Real Estate Conference. Yeah. And my first impression of you was bouncing around, emceeing the event. I was like, that is the most confident man I've ever seen. Like Jason Gunn, what an absolute legend. And then in conversation with you afterwards, found out that you get really nervous. I was like, I couldn't put those two things together, which was, you know, I think Shay did a post about how sort of inspiring that was because he gets really nervous.
Yeah, super nervous. It was surreal. It was surreal to hear you say that.
Yeah. Well, I think the best of us do get really nervous. I think the nerves are a good thing. I think the nerves, well, number one, I like you if you get nervous because you're grounded, right? I always say if you get nervous, it's because you actually want, I really want this to go well. I don't assume it's going to go well. I don't assume I'm all that and a bag of chips. So I worry about what could go wrong. And then I just go about thinking, well, what things can I put in place to make sure that doesn't happen? So nerves are great. I always just say it's just about controlling them and not letting them control you.
