Mario Vargas Llosa takes, of course, real elements of history, as was the regime of Rafael Trujillo, and adds characters and different fictional elements. This novel is very interesting because it has three paths, let's say it has three stories, all happen in parallel, and in each of the characters they return to the past and think about the different decisions they made to get where they are. These three stories are the story of Urania Cabral, who is a Dominican woman who left the Dominican Republic during the Trujillo regime, shortly before they killed him, but she was the daughter of a senator of the Rafael Trujillo regime.

She reads them, but she has not answered them. But after reading them, she finds out that her father, who is still alive after being a senator of the Trujillo regime, is in very poor health. So she decides for the first time in 35 years to visit the Dominican Republic.

When she arrives at her father's house, she realizes that her health is much worse than she thought. Basically, her father can't talk anymore, he can't communicate, he understands what they say, but he no longer has a way of communicating, given the certain damage he had in his brain. So she decides, or rather, takes advantage of this opportunity to face him, to ask him how he could have been so faithful to a tyrant like Rafael Trujillo. In fact, he even asked him, because Uraña begins to remember that Trujillo used to go to the houses of his various government officials only to have sexual relations with the wives of his officials.
