News when you want it with Bloomberg News Now. I'm Karen Moscow. President Trump gave a forceful defense of his administration and his economic policies in a record-setting State of the Union address.
It is indeed a turnaround for the ages.
In a speech that lasted an hour and 47 minutes, the president declared inflation is plummeting, incomes are rising, the economy is roaring, and America's enemies are scared.
One of the primary reasons for our country's stunning economic turnaround, the biggest in history where the Dow Jones broke 50,000 four years ahead of schedule and the S&P hit 7,000 where it wasn't supposed to do it for many years. We're tariffs.
And despite what he called the Supreme Court's very disappointing ruling against his tariffs, President Trump said he'll keep pursuing them through other authorities. President Trump sprinkled a few policy proposals in his speech, like a retirement savings match for workers without 401ks and a ban on commercial driver's licenses for undocumented immigrants. He also sprinkled the speech with attacks on Democrats.
