News when you want it with Bloomberg News Now, I'm Amy Morris. There's your closing bell for this Thursday on Wall Street, where a renewed episode of bond volatility left traders reluctant to make riskier bets. And stocks wavered over concerns that these high oil prices will fuel inflation. We check the markets for you all day long here at Bloomberg. The S&P 500 lost less than two points. NASDAQ gained three points. The Dow down 162 points. The 10-year Treasury yield at 5.19 percent, the 2-year yield at 4.92 percent, and the 30-year yield at 5.48 percent. Now, those 30-year bond yields are at their highest level in 20 years, driven by those inflation fears and concerns over government debt. Bloomberg Intelligence Chief Interest Rate Strategist

Ira Jersey. People just don't know where the high in yield is going to be, so it's hard for people to jump in and kind of nibble, especially this late in the year, until we get some kind of clarity as to what's going to drive interest rates significantly lower, particularly at that long end of the curve.

Bloomberg's IRA jersey, the Bloomberg Global Aggregate Treasuries Index, shows the average yield on government debt worldwide now stands near 4%. That's the highest since 2007. Chinese leader Xi Jinping is urging the U.S. to oppose Taiwan independence, marking his most explicit call for President Trump to change America's decades old stance, which is that the U.S. doesn't support Taiwan independence. Meanwhile, the U.S. has agreed to a two month extension of its trade truce. Montana Republican Senator Stephen Daines.
Stephen Daines 2:16
Very important market for our ranchers and our farmers. It's the second largest beef export market in the world. Huge markets are for wheat, barley. You look at 95% of the world's consumers live outside the United States. And so this is a very important market.
Amy Morris 2:31
Senator Daines was on balance of power. Trump is hosting she and his wife for a state dinner later tonight. A group of delegates walked out of the U.N. General Assembly when Israeli leader Benjamin Netanyahu took the podium to speak. The prime minister denounced those who walked out as, quote, moral cowards and defended the war with Iran. We're going to win. We have no other choice. Netanyahu saying again the survival of Israel is at stake. after the October 7th attacks three years ago. Oil rallied after it pared back earlier gains after a Reuters report that U.S. and Iranian negotiators are looking at a phased path out of the war that would involve Tehran reopening the Strait of Hormuz and Washington lifting its economic blockade of Iran.

The biggest obstacle for now looks like neither side wants to be the first to surrender its leverage. An Iranian official tells Reuters the most plausible way to end the impasse would be a phased arrangement. Crude oil is higher, WTI topping $95 a barrel and Brent crude more than $107 a barrel. U.S. mortgage rates topped 7 percent for the first time in nearly two years. New home sales climbed in August at its fastest pace this year. That suggests a mix of price cuts and sales incentives may be helping ease affordability constraints. Initial jobless claims are down to their lowest level since July. Just 197,000 new applications filed last week. Continuing claims are little changed at 1.72 million, near their lowest level in three years.

Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammock says the labor market does remain close to maximum employment.
Beth Hammock 4:11
