News when you want it with Bloomberg News Now. I'm Nathan Hager. Tuesday morning trading is underway on Wall Street with a lot for investors to consider this morning. That is the sound of the opening bell from the floor of the New York Stock Exchange. At the open, the S&P 500 is little changed, up about two points, trading close to the 7,000 level, though.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average opens little changed to lower, down about 10 points. And the Nasdaq Composite, little changed as well, up just one point. As we say, lots to consider for corporate earnings and economic data. We'll start with the data. Consumer prices for December came in about where economists expected. More from Bloomberg's Michael McKee.

92.197 - 111.131 Michael McKee

We got a kind of a mixed picture, cats and dogs kind of report here. We had some surprises. In both directions. The general consensus was we might see a little bit higher inflation because of the data collection problems that they had in October and November. But instead, we come and bang on estimates, basically.

111.151 - 133.669 Nathan Hager

And Bloomberg's Mike McKee reports those numbers are raising bets for a Fed interest rate cut in June. President Trump is responding to the numbers on Truth Social, calling them great for the USA and reiterating his argument that Chairman Powell should cut interest rates meaningfully, in the president's words. We also got earnings from JPMorgan Chase. Those came in mostly better than expected.

The beats were really strong, especially on the market side. Revenues on the markets trading side looks like it's up 17% year over year. That's higher than consensus and higher than what they had outlined at a recent investor conference.

Chapter 2: What are the initial market conditions at the opening bell?

186.213 - 203.093 Patrick McHenry

is real right now. It is shaking on Capitol Hill. This is substantially different than jawboning the chair of the Federal Reserve, which is what we've seen from most presidents, but especially from this president. And we'll see whether or not it truly matters.

Former Republican Congressman Patrick McHenry is now a Bloomberg News contributor. Today, President Trump will look to put the focus on his economic policies with a visit to Battleground, Michigan. Bloomberg's Tyler Kendall has a preview.

214.931 - 233.061 Tyler Kendall

On the heels of the CPI report, I'd expect President Trump to refocus the narrative on the economy in a critical battleground state, not just with his speech to the Economic Club in Detroit, but he's also set to tour a Ford Motors factory plant where they make F-150s in a bid to tout his domestic manufacturing plans.

push and his more protectionist policies like tariffs in a place that's seeing a mixed economic situation.

239.694 - 254.158 Nathan Hager

Bloomberg's Tyler Kendall. That speech to the Detroit Economic Club is set for 2 p.m. Wall Street time, and you can hear it live on Bloomberg Radio or watch on Bloomberg Television or the Bloomberg podcast page on YouTube. The White House is ending temporary protected status for Somalis.

254.339 - 269.978 Nathan Hager

As of March 17, Press Secretary Caroline Leavitt announced the move on X, saying it will affect thousands of people, including in Minnesota, where the administration is ramping up enforcement crackdowns. President Trump has accused Somali immigrants in Minnesota of fraudulently taking advantage of government benefits.

270.318 - 285.228 Nathan Hager

Minnesota filed a lawsuit against the ICE surge yesterday, days after a federal agent shot and killed a woman in Minneapolis. The Supreme Court is hearing back-to-back cases today from a pair of transgender athletes who are challenging bans from their taking part in girls' sports teams.

285.288 - 302.722 Nathan Hager

These cases in West Virginia and Ohio could affect 25 other states with similar laws that require students to compete on teams based on their birth genders. Turning back to Wall Street, shares of Delta Airlines are down about 1% at the open following the carrier's latest earnings. Bloomberg's Dan Curtis has that.

302.942 - 320.103 Dan Curtis

The company came out, reported fourth quarter earnings that did be analyst estimates. But 2026, the earnings guidance for this year is $6.50 to $7.50. Most of that range is under the 720 estimate. So this year is looking not quite as strong as Wall Street was expecting.

Chapter 3: How did consumer prices impact investor sentiment?
