Chapter 1: What is the main topic discussed in this episode?
News when you want it with Bloomberg News Now. I'm Doug Krisner. The sell America trade was back in full force across U.S. financial markets today. President Trump's demand for U.S. control over Greenland stoked anxieties about potential worst case scenarios. And that would include a rupture in the NATO alliance or perhaps a full blown trade war between the U.S. and Europe.
Over the weekend, Trump announced a new 10% levy on eight EU countries opposed to his plans to seize Greenland. Today, we heard from French President Emmanuel Macron.
Chapter 2: What are the implications of Trump's Greenland demand?
He said the U.S. tariff threats will not help the global economy to thrive. Here is Macron speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.
I mean, it doesn't make sense to have tariffs and be divided, and even to threaten now with additional tariffs. We can use, I mean, the crazy thing is that we can be put in a situation to use the anti-coercion mechanism for the very first time. vis-Ć -vis the U.S. if they put additional ties.
French President Emmanuel Macron speaking at the World Economic Forum. Meantime, Treasury Secretary Scott Besson, also speaking at Davos, said there is a reason why President Trump has set his sights on Greenland. And Besson told EU leaders, do not retaliate. Here is Besson on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum, speaking with Fox Business Conversation.
I tell everyone, sit back, take a deep breath. Do not retaliate. Do not retaliate. The president will be here tomorrow and he will get his message across. I believe he is going to have meetings. And again, also have an open mind. Why this rapid response in terms of this is a no? And by the way, Maria, this has been in the minds of American presidents for more than 150 years.
That was U.S.

Chapter 3: How are global leaders responding to U.S. tariff threats?
Treasury Secretary Scott Besson speaking to Maria Bartiromo with the Fox Business Conversation at the World Economic Forum in Davos. Incidentally, on Wednesday, President Trump will be speaking to the gathering. Meantime, Finnish President Alexander Stubb says there is a short-term need to de-escalate language on Greenland.
He added that he's been communicating with President Trump over the issue.
Of course, on the Greenland issue, I disagree with the president. I think now what we need to do is to bring down the temperature. We need to find an off-ramp and probably create some kind of a process which will strengthen Arctic security. And sort of at the end of the tunnel, I wish we could have a NATO summit in Ankara, where we all agree on a new Arctic security.
That is Finnish President Alexander Stubbe speaking to Bloomberg on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos. After the bell, Netflix reported fourth quarter results largely above Wall Street estimates. However, the company did issue a cautious forecast for the months ahead.
Netflix is planning to increase spending on films and TV shows by 10% this year, while at the same time moving ahead with plans to buy the studio and streaming businesses of Warner Brothers Discovery. We got reaction from John Belton at Gabelli Funds.
Top line numbers generally look pretty healthy. Good update on the subscriber number at over 325 million. That suggests that 2025 was another pretty solid year for member growth. I think the big disappointment in terms of the numbers is just on the margin guidance, 31.5%.
I think that adjusts to about 32%, if my math was correct, if you back out that acquisition-related cost number that they flagged. So I think that's probably... Okay, but a little bit short of expectation.
John Belton of Gabelli Fund speaking on Netflix. Shares of Netflix were down about 4.8% in late U.S. trading. U.S. forces have seized another tanker in the Caribbean. This would be the seventh ship taken since President Trump announced a blockade to prevent sanctioned vessels from going to or from Venezuela. In a statement, the U.S.
Southern Command said the ship was operating in defiance of President Trump's established quarantine of sanctioned vessels in the Caribbean. Supreme Court is hearing arguments on Wednesday over President Trump's effort to oust Fed Governor Lisa Cook. More on that from Bloomberg's Amy Morris in Washington.
