President Trump is indicating that he'll make changes to his administration's deportation crackdown in Minnesota after the killing of two U.S. citizens during immigration raids sparked nationwide uproar. Trump says he'll consider independent investigations into those shootings and reducing the number of federal agents in Minnesota.
Democrats are threatening to shut down the government unless Republicans strip funding for the Department of Homeland Security. Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer is vowing to block a massive spending package. Bloomberg's Tyler Kendall.
The issue with that, though, is that any changes to the broader spending package would have to get kicked back down to the House and the crown of Washington until February 2nd, which means that they would have to come back in early. And we're already starting to see some issues and delays on Capitol Hill related to the weather.
White House Press Secretary Caroline Leavitt is urging the Senate to pass a bipartisan appropriations bill. And even if that spending package is blocked, ICE has already been appropriated $75 billion through fiscal 2029 through the Republican spending package that passed last summer.
Schumer released a statement saying that the responsibility to prevent a shutdown is now on Senate Majority Leader John Thune's shoulders. A federal judge has heard arguments on whether to halt Minnesota's immigration crackdown after those two deadly shootings. The state of Minnesota and the cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul

Chapter 2: What changes is Trump considering for his deportation strategy?
Lots of chatter, really going back several months about how long Kristi Noem may stay in that role. But there's a clear sign here that the administration, Republicans on the Hill are really not happy with how the use of force is happening in Minnesota. I'll also note that Noem and Homan have often been at loggerheads.
Laura Davison, Bloomberg News Deputy Washington Bureau Chief on Bloomberg Surveillance, and White House Press Secretary Caroline Leavitt says Greg Bovino will continue to lead Customs and Border Patrol.
Mr. Bovino is a wonderful man, and he's a great professional. He is going to very much continue to lead Customs and Border Patrol throughout and across the country. Mr. Homan will be the main point of contact on the ground in Minneapolis.
And the Associated Press says it looks like Bovino will be leaving Minneapolis tomorrow and take some CBP officers with him. Republican Chris Mattel says he is ending his campaign for governor of Minnesota, saying that he cannot support the national members of his party and their, quote, retribution on the citizens of our state.
United States citizens, particularly those of color, live in fear. United States citizens are carrying papers to prove their citizenship. That's wrong. ISIS authorizes agents to raid homes using a civil warrant that need only be signed by a Border Patrol agent.
That's unconstitutional and it's wrong. Mattel says he supported the original stated purpose of Operation Metro Surge, but says that operation has expanded far beyond its stated focus. Precious metals soared to new highs as investors continued to load up on hard assets as a hedge against geopolitical tensions and economic uncertainty. The S&P gained 35 points. NASDAQ gained 100 points.

Chapter 3: What are the Democrats' threats regarding government shutdown?
The Dow 313 points higher. The 10-year Treasury yield at 4.21%. The two-year yield at 3.59% spot gold nearly 1.5% higher and silver more than 5% higher, jumping the most since 2008. The Trump administration is proposing roughly flat rates for Medicare insurers next year. That moved shares of UnitedHealth and CVS about 9% lower.
Shares of CoreWeave gained about 6% in the regular session, NVIDIA investing another $2 billion in the cloud infrastructure company's stock to speed its effort to add more than 5 gigawatts of AI compute by 2030. An estimated 12% of U.S. natural gas production was knocked offline by that powerful winter storm.
Natural gas prices hit the highest since December of 2022, and right now natural gas prices are about 25% higher. Ye, formerly known as Kanye West, is apologizing for his past anti-Semitic comments, attributing his behavior to bipolar disorder. Now, in the past, Ye has embraced Hitler, the use of swastikas, and has a history of anti-Semitic rants.

Well, now, in a full-page ad in the Wall Street Journal, Ye wrote that he's committed to accountability and meaningful change.
