Chapter 2: What did President Trump say at the World Economic Forum in Davos?
U.S. mortgage applications for home purchases climbed last week to the highest since January 2023. It's suggesting a further easing in financing costs is contributing to a thaw in the housing market. The Mortgage Bankers Association's index of home purchase applications rose 5.1 percent in the week ending January 16th.
The contract rate on a 30-year mortgage slipped two basis points to 6.16 percent, still the lowest since September 2024. NVIDIA CEO Jensen Wang says the infrastructure around AI will need trillions of dollars in additional investment over the coming years. Wang spoke to BlackRock's Larry Fink at the World Economic Forum in Davos.
This is the largest... infrastructure build-out in human history, that's going to create a lot of jobs. And it's wonderful that the jobs are related to tradecraft. And we're going to have plumbers and electricians and construction and steel workers network technicians and people who install and fit out the equipment.
All of these jobs, in the United States, we're seeing quite a significant boom in this area. Salaries have gone up, nearly doubled. And so we're talking about six figure salaries for people who are building chip factories or computer factories.
And that's NVIDIA's Jensen Wong speaking to BlackRock's Larry Fink at the World Economic Forum in Davos. As the president speaks, futures remain lower. S&P futures down a tenth of a percent. Dow futures down three-tenths of a percent. So are Nasdaq futures. Ten-year Treasury yield 4.28 percent. That's news when you want it with Bloomberg News Now. I'm Karen Moscow and this is Bloomberg.
