US forces have carried out fresh strikes against Iran overnight, targeting air defence and surveillance sites near the Strait of Hormuz. The attacks, which the US military described as proportional, came just hours after President Trump blamed Tehran for shooting down an American military helicopter off the coast of Oman.
ABC's Chief Washington Correspondent Jonathan Karl said he was on the phone with Trump when the strikes were announced.
The president made it clear to me that these U.S. strikes on Iran are specifically in response to Iran's downing of that Apache helicopter. He brought up the peace deal that he is trying to negotiate with the Iranians. It seemed clear to me that even as he was ordering U.S. attacks on Iran, he still believes he can get a peace deal with the Iranians.
Carl said Trump also told him he does not see the strikes as the start of a major new offensive against Iran. In response to the latest US action, Iran's Joint Military Command said it had targeted several US bases in the region. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps also said that it had launched a drone strike targeting the US Fifth Fleet in Bahrain.
In a post on social media, Iranian Foreign Minister Basar Aghchi said the country will leave no attack or threat unanswered. The US military's Central Command says its forces remain vigilant and postured to defend against unjustified Iranian aggression.

Chapter 2: What recent military actions did the US take against Iran?
Little Pangeli is among the political leaders from Northern Ireland's five main parties who issued a joint statement to say they were united in their condemnation of the horrific incident. The violence is the latest in a string of incidents in the UK in recent months to have stoked racial tensions.
The UK Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, is preparing to announce a ban on children younger than 16 using social media. The government's technology secretary, Liz Kendall, says that thinking has hardened after seeing nine out of 10 parents would support the move.
The tougher attitude towards tech comes as Bloomberg's Emily Chang has been speaking to the two siblings who founded Anthropic, the AI agent which promises to take a more ethical approach to Silicon Valley. Daniela Amadei says they need to succeed where social media firms have failed.
If the social media companies could go back in time and see the world that they see today, would they do anything differently? I like to think the answer to that is yes, I don't know. If we sort of project some of the challenges that the social media companies have faced around child welfare, mental health, election integrity, all of these topics, we're really lucky that we're second.
We view it as our job to try and proactively think about all of the things that could go wrong, because if we don't, who's going to?
Anthropics President Daniela Amadei there. The UK's proposed social media ban is expected to be part of a series of policy announcements in coming weeks by Keir Starmer, whose leadership is seen as under threat.
We just heard from the president of Anthropic there. The firm is widely releasing a version of its Mythos model without cyber capabilities. The latest iteration is called Fable 5 and has guardrails preventing responses to certain queries, including those related to cybersecurity and biology.
Anthropic's CEO, Dario Amadei, says some in the tech world aren't consistent in their approach to regulation.
As soon as they see the first real danger, which I've been expecting all along, there's all this talk of like nationalization and the government should just seize it. Come on, folks here, you're yo-yoing from like the most extreme anti-regulatory, if you look at us the wrong way, you're destroying the industry, to, you know, this completely communist, the government should grab it all.
