Chapter 1: What is the main topic discussed in this episode?

1.651 - 17.562 Doug Krisner

Chapter 2: What happened during Maria Corina Machado's meeting with President Trump?

18.023 - 33.737 Doug Krisner

Now, this meeting comes as U.S. forces seized a sixth oil tanker near Venezuela earlier today. Shale billionaire Harold Hamm said oil companies need guarantees that their assets will not be seized by Venezuela if they help revive the nation's crude production.

There's a lot of geopolitical risk in Venezuela. Certainly we've seen... Companies, Darren Woods said Exxon had been there twice and been nationalized. You don't want to go there and spend a lot of money and see your assets go away when nationalization occurs. So, you know, there's got to be guarantees against that. We've seen other companies burned real bad there.

Harold Hamm speaking on Bloomberg Surveillance. The U.S. and Taiwan have agreed to a trade deal. It will lower tariffs to 15% from the previous 20%, and U.S. tariffs on goods from Taiwan are now on par with both Japan and South Korea. As a part of this deal, Taiwan semiconductor companies will be making at least $250 billion in direct investments

It's not in the White House memo, but we reported earlier this week that the deal would include Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company agreeing to build as many as four additional plants beyond the six factories that it has promised to build here in the US over the next several years, along with two packaging facilities. So we're talking about a lot of investment here.

That is Bloomberg's Michael Shepard. Now, the U.S. trade deal with Taiwan comes as TSMC, the world's top maker of AI chips, earmarked a hefty increase in capital spending for 2026. Here is Bloomberg analyst Matthew Bloxham.

128.551 - 146.273 Matthew Bloxham

They're talking about $52 to $56 billion of capital spending in this coming year. That's about $6 to $10 billion, or 15% to 20% higher than the market was expecting, and a big step up year on year, over $10 billion up year on year.

146.253 - 166.354 Doug Krisner

That is Matthew Bloxham from Bloomberg Intelligence. China is pulling the plug on a key advantage held by high-frequency traders. We are told commodity futures exchanges in Shanghai and Guangzhou are among those ordering local brokerage firms to shift their servers for clients out of data centers run by the exchanges.

166.815 - 181.774 Doug Krisner

Now, this change will affect the speed advantage for high-frequency firms, including Citadel, Chain Street, and Jump Trading. President Trump has threatened to invoke the Insurrection Act as protests against federal immigration agents grow in Minnesota.

Chapter 3: What geopolitical risks are associated with Venezuela's oil industry?

182.114 - 198.619 Doug Krisner

Today on social media, Trump threatened to deploy U.S. military forces if politicians in Minnesota do not stop protesters from attacking ICE agents. These tensions continue after another federal officer-involved shooting. Here is Bloomberg's David Goura.

Last night around 7, a federal officer shot a man in the leg in Minneapolis. The Department of Homeland Security says that man, whom they've identified as a Venezuelan national who entered the U.S. without authorization, fled from a targeted traffic stop in his vehicle, crashed into a parked car, and then left the scene on foot. The scene then escalated. Some other folks got involved.

The DHS says an officer tried to make an arrest. And then the officer fired defensive shots.

That is Bloomberg's David Gurra. Troops from NATO countries are arriving in Greenland to boost security, and this follows talks in Washington between Denmark, Greenland, and the United States, talks that highlighted disagreements over Greenland's future. Here is White House Press Secretary Caroline Leavitt.

The two sides agreed to really establish a working group of individuals who will continue to have technical talks on the acquisition of Greenland. Those talks will take place, I'm told, every two to three weeks. So this is a conversation the administration intends to keep having with the Danes and with the respected delegation from Greenland. But the president has made his priority quite clear.

264.24 - 268.245 Caroline Leavitt

He wants the United States to acquire Greenland. He thinks it's in our best national security to do that.

268.225 - 289.508 Doug Krisner

That is White House Press Secretary Caroline Leavitt. Also today, French President Emmanuel Macron announced the deployment of French troops to Greenland. Germany is sending a reconnaissance team, and Denmark is also increasing its military presence on the island. JPMorgan Chase Chair and CEO Jamie Dimon is not interested in being chairman of the Federal Reserve.

289.888 - 294.553 Doug Krisner

Dimon spoke earlier today with David Rubenstein at a U.S. Chamber of Commerce event.

294.854 - 308.252 Jamie Dimon

Well, chairman of the Fed, I'd put in the absolutely, positively, no chance, no way, no how for any reason. Okay. If I were to do a treasury, I would consider it. If a president calls you up and asks you to do something, you should consider it.

Chapter 4: What are the details of the US-Taiwan trade deal?

308.312 - 313.159 Jamie Dimon

So I would take the call and consider it and think about why and what they want, etc.

You can catch more of the interview with Jamie Dimon on The David Rubenstein Show, Peer-to-Peer Conversations, airing January 21st at 9 p.m. Wall Street time. Spotify has more than 280 million paid subscribers, and the company has been under pressure to raise prices to keep them in line with increases by other consumer service platforms such as Netflix. And that is news when you want it with Bloomberg News Now. I'm Doug Krisner, and this is Bloomberg.
