They included blown leads. They included comebacks. They included extra innings wins, extra innings losses. The Blue Jays played extra innings four times in the last five games over three cities all on the road. It is a lot going on, and it would... There is enough in each of those games to stress you out in the way that maybe you missed. Maybe it looked like the Jays weren't going to play stressful enough baseball there for a little bit, but they're hanging around it enough. They've won four. They've unofficially won four series in a row.
The league determining that that Cubs one-off counts as breaking the streak, but. They've won a decent amount of baseball games lately, and that is good. It makes these games feel high leverage. The Jays have been playing better. They've been playing better defensively. They've been getting some decent pitching. They have been scrapping back. It no longer feels like if they get down two to nothing in a game that it's over. So all that is good, and it's nice to feel stressed during games. It's nice to, yeah, feel a little insane when they don't go your way or you disagree with a decision or bad bounces go your way or bad bounces go against you, all those things. It will also probably make you... A little irrational to know that it felt like a very good weekend of baseball.
The Jays beat a pretty good Phillies team two out of three. They took one in extra innings. They forced 13 in another one. They played some pretty good baseball with the deck stacked against them, given how worn out their bullpen is and the injuries they're dealing with. And they're just not having a lot of bats in the lineup right now. And yet, despite winning two of three, despite winning four of their last, despite winning their last four series with the little Cubs asterisk there, they still open today. With six teams to jump in the wild card and three and a half games back with playoff odds that are only 6%. So for all the good that the Blue Jays have done over the last two weeks or so, and I think it's there.
I think they're objectively playing better baseball. Baseball that you are a little bit more familiar with. Baseball that you're probably enjoying watching a little bit more. They have not put much of a dent at all whatsoever in the wildcard standings. And this is the issue with not only getting three and a half games back in the wildcard, but having six teams to jump because the team that they were previously chasing, the Cleveland Guardians and Minnesota Twins, well, they'd only be two back of those teams. The Mariners, they are tied with. But the Texas Rangers won a bunch of games in a row. The Detroit Tigers, who sneaky have the best run differential in the American League, have won a bunch of games after trading Tarek Skubal and Casey Mize.
So you remain three and a half games back. You remain with a whole bunch of teams to jump. So it doesn't feel the best. And, oh, by the way, the hottest team in, like, the history of baseball arrives today for a four-game set in the Boston Red Sox. The Jays will play four against the Red Sox at home, then three against the Yankees at home. Get a day off, finally. Then go play the Rays. Then go play the Yankees. Then the schedule gets a little friendlier and you get some of these teams you're chasing. So a lot going on here probably emotionally, vibe-wise. You as a fan, I'm sure it's not universal how you feel, but that was a fun weekend. That was a fun week of baseball. It feels a little bit more like this stuff matters and, you know,
The pitching change decision in the 12th inning or the intentional walk in the 13th inning really matters in a way that a couple weeks ago, maybe it didn't feel like it would. Playoff odds are still only 6%, so maybe your mileage varies with what the next couple weeks look like, but it makes for a fun Red Sox series anyway.
