Why is Vladimir Guerrero Jr.'s first home run at Rogers Centre a big story?
Couple of downs, couple of ups, one really big up yesterday. And here on Monday morning, the Blue Jays find themselves in the same spot they were heading into the series on Friday. They win two of three against the Baltimore Orioles. A bad loss on Friday where Max Scherzer kind of got bled with singles and doubles. The Blue Jays Helped the Orioles out a little bit with some base running. There was a weird Sammy Basayo non-challenge that really swung an inning. Didn't feel great. But as has been the case often for the Toronto Blue Jays, a bullpen day gets them right. Spencer Argetti looks the best that he has looked yet. Seven pitchers combine to get it done on Saturday. Brett Bateman homers for a second day in a row after hitting six home runs over his first like 400 college and pro games.
Uh and then Sunday rolls around and Dylan Sees makes it look like it's going to be rough, rough, rough out of the gate. Loads of bases, nobody out. Pitch counts climbing, can't locate. He gets out of it, and he manages to highwire act his way to five innings. Bullpen picks him up from there. And most importantly, in yesterday's game, probably. Insurance runs came for the Blue Jays that allowed them to save Louis Varland. Uh the bullpen would have been fairly taxed heading into this Tiger series had they not got those insurance runs. Uh, yeah, the the back-to-back-to-back. Home runs from uh George Pringer, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Kazuma Okamoto were pretty fun as well. Now, elsewhere, Cleveland won two of three against Minnesota, so the Blue Jays remain one game back.
However, because of what happened in other series, uh, the Blue Jays playoff odds jumped from about 34% to about 43%. That's because a couple of these teams have fallen far enough out of it now, including the Orioles. Uh, so the Blue Jays did an extra job. There as well, where statistically, probabilistically, you know, the Orioles, the Twins, the Tigers, the Mariners aren't super relevant here unless they get on an absolute heater the next two weeks. The other thing we will watch for and we will set up later in this show is that the Guardians have almost caught the White Sox. And those two teams play three games against each other starting tonight. And that is potentially bad news for the Blue Jays because while they own the tiebreaker against the Guardians, they do not own the tiebreaker.
Against the White Sox. I believe this is the one series a year, then, where you guys will not get on me if I wear my very good Chicago White Sox hat, their City Connect hat. I accidentally wore it on the show once and a bunch of people were like, How are you wearing a White Sox hat? Meanwhile, the White Sox won like 12 games that year or whatever. Maybe I'll dust it off. Uh, they also won four in a row, although three of those are against Colorado. The Blue Jays know you can't uh you can't bank wins against the Rockies in the Athletics and the Royals. Uh, but I don't know that the Tigers doing backflips for those. We will talk to Ricky Romero later in the show as well. Good. Um, yeah. Fun very fun sports weekend, very fun sports day yesterday. Uh I assume the sports day for you ended at like four twenty four and everything was great and nothing else happened, right?
Yeah, it was uh it was totally fine. I went and uh I watched my favorite flag football league. It was uh it was a really good time uh to watch, you know, some of the best athletes in the world tap each other and and no one got hurt and and everyone stayed on their feet and no one's jersey got grass on it and and we all enjoyed uh a sport that hasn't been ruined by over refereeing.
