Banned Books with Francisca Goldsmith - Episode 11

25 Feb 2022

Description

The history of banned books dates back over 2300 years and has included legal proscription, moral edict, and, especially during war, burning of material; some religions dedicate bureaucracy to minding ban-able publications, such as the RC Index Librorum Prohibitorum; both western and eastern governments have practiced adjudicated banning efforts ranging from specific titles that have been “tried” judicially (Lady Chatterly’s Lover in England for example) to sweeping expungement of ideas published by a class or group, such as Nazi era book burnings and the less well known confiscation of texts by Jews or found in Jewish libraries during the Aunschluss.   In contemporary US, challenges and banning typically target titles aimed at audiences at three age groups, each of which age just happens to be one in which the young are gaining developmental independence in ways that frighten some adults (ages 4, 11, and 16).   What are the top 10 banned books of all time? https://www.freedomtoread.ca/resources/bannings-and-burnings-in-history/   What are current books that have been banned?
