Chapter 1: What is the main topic discussed in this episode?
It's the Boomer and Geo podcast from WFAN. And we're coming to you live from the Build 4 Tough Studio. Boomer Esaias and Greg Giannotti. It's Boomer and Geo on the fans. Simulcast across the country on CBS Sports Network and wherever you're on the free Odyssey app. Good Friday morning, a feel-good football Friday championship weekend, championship Sunday.
We got the helmets in front of us here on the desk. You can see them on CBS Sports Network. I'm sure Al put it out on social media as well. I got the Rams and the Seahawks in front of me. Boomer's got the Pats and the Broncos in front of him as we've really not talked about these matchups all that much on the show because we've had John Harbaugh and we had New York Mets stuff and
Everything this week, the Knicks that has distracted us from it, so we will get into it heavy today. Some more coaching stuff going on out there. The Baltimore Ravens hired Jesse Minter. That was another one that we actually got right. That was a bunch we got wrong, but so far... We've got that one right, and we got Harbaugh right, and we had Jeff Halfley right going to Miami.
Chapter 2: What are the key matchups in the AFC and NFC championship games?
So it's all about these relationships out there in the NFL, and John Harbaugh continues to get his way within the Giants organization, which is what we expected. Exciting stuff for them. Good morning, Boomer. How are you? Yeah, good morning, Jay. We made it.
we did so yeah last night uh at tellers next door it was a great night for our foundation and uh just want to say thank you to greg buttle and for sean o'hara trekking all the way from jersey franklin lakes all the way out to islip new york on a thursday afternoon not easy but uh it certainly was a great night we uh both got in very late last night uh but we wanted to show up for a football friday with these uh these two championship games on sunday the first one being the broncos and
Patriots at three o'clock on CBS and then of course after that on Fox will be the Rams and the Seahawks and to think that these are the four teams uh that were left or are left it was amazing and listening to everybody's different perspective last night at our chalk talk at Tellers when you listen to Sean he has a perspective you listen to Buttle he has a perspective you know most of the people that were sitting at the table that I was at last night
Everybody has a different viewpoint of these two games, and it's really amazing when you think about it because the number one topic I felt like last night that kept coming up was Sam Darnold. Sam Darnold, Sam Darnold, Sam Darnold.
And the fact that he was a Jet, and when he was a Jet, he was 20 years old, and he was in way over his head, and now he's on his fifth team, and now he's leading his team. He's one step away from the Super Bowl, which is really remarkable when you think of his career arc.
Yeah, and that was, I think, the reason why we talk so much about Sam is because Greg Buttle and Sean O'Hara had different opinions on it. Greg Buttle said that Sam Darnold was the most talented quarterback he had seen in a Jets uniform since Joe Namath, and he didn't have the right coaching, and he was so young and all of these things. By the way, you think I should have taken that as an insult?
Uh, no. I don't know whether or not I was going to chime in on that one and say, hey, hey, meathead.
Ha!
Yeah, he was trying to go after you, but no, I mean, I don't think you take that one as an insult. But Sam, of course, ends up going to, you know, after the Carolina disaster, he gets with Kyle Shanahan, then he gets with Kevin O'Connell, and now he's out there with Clint Kubiak and the Seahawks. So Sean O'Hara is basically saying that you blitz Sam Darnold, he turns the ball over.

Chapter 3: How is Sam Darnold's performance viewed in the context of his career?
So you're going to see a lot of press coverage, I would think. I think they're going to put the pressure on Jarrett Stidham, the Patriots, well, from a defensive perspective, to make those throws and see if he can. If he hits a couple big ones, then maybe he gets some confidence. And the next thing you know, this is going to be a tight game. I do think both games are going to be tight.
And we'll talk about who we're going to pick a little bit later on. But I don't know. I just hope that we get really two solid games that isn't decided by an officiating gaffe, a replay gaffe, something else that is going to leave a bad taste in our mouth like we had last week when we watched the Bills walk off the field. So we've talked about Jared Stidham making his first star.
We don't know what we're going to get. Drake May has had an amazing season, but still he's a second-year player playing in it. Turnover machine. Yeah, playing in a championship game on the road. This is another prove-it situation, even though Sam has answered all the questions this year in a Seahawks uniform, but still another prove-it situation for Sam against a team that has given him fits.
And there's one guy that is supposed to be here. He's done it before, and that's Matthew Stafford, who's playing his ass off and playing what could be the best football of his entire career. And, you know, sometimes these things are complicated, trying to figure out these games and who's going to do what. And these teams are so good because they're in the championship games.
But sometimes it boils down to the guy at the most important position playing the best with the weapons that he has. And road, home, doesn't matter. This guy has been absolutely spectacular, and he's got a Super Bowl-winning head coach that he's already won one with. So, I mean, that combination is going to be hard to pick against. It really is.
All the respect to what the Seahawks have done, and they are top to bottom a phenomenal team. It's just going to be hard to pick against Matt Stafford and Sean McVay. It's just that Seattle has such momentum at home right now. And we saw it last week. They're totally healthy with the exception of Zach Charbonnet, their other running back, along with Kenneth Walker.
And they've been a two-running back team all year long. Now they're going to lose one of those two runners. So a little bit more, I think, on the shoulders of Sam Darnold. He's going to have to play better than he did last week. Now, I don't know last week. If you remember before the game, all of a sudden on the injured list comes Sam Darnold with an oblique injury.
And I'm like, you know, he only threw the ball 17 times in last week's game. And that's because the defense was smothering the 49ers. And they started the game off with a return kickoff for a touchdown. So, you know, I'm hopefully he's feeling 100 percent and there's nothing going on there.
But he's going to have to he's going to I believe he's going to have to do more, of course, in order to win the football game. So, you know, it is like I can't even begin to tell you, like when you go on the road in these two stadiums, the Broncos and Seahawks, two of the greatest stadiums in the NFL. and two of the hardest stadiums for the opposing quarterback to play in because it is so loud.

Chapter 4: What are the implications of Jared Stidham starting for the Broncos?
What's your favorite helmet? It's the Bronco one with the matted finish. Oh, the Seahawks are kind of matted. Yeah, I like the Bronco one. Okay. I do. I like the Bronco one, then the Rams one, then the Seahawks and the Patriots.
You know, I came in, I immediately went to the Bronco one, and then I started looking at the bright colors of the Rams one, especially how this metallic blue was just hitting. It pops. So I have a slight, slight lead, number one Rams, number two Broncos. Al, what do you think?
I'm with Jerry. I go Broncos, Rams, Seahawks, Patriots.
Eddie? Rams, but it's only because I really hate the other three. And if we had the old helmets for the other three, Broncos by far. I like the old Bronco helmets. Oh, my God. Beautiful. This new Bronco helmet has a 5280 above the face mask, you know? Mm-hmm.
Mile high. Sea level. I mean, everybody knew that. I wanted to chat and see if Al knew. I did not know that. See, he did not know it, and then you jumped out at the answer. I asked Jerry this morning, and Jerry told me.
Oh, he did tell you this morning. Okay, good job, Jerry. Well, it's something we had discussed prior. Yeah. I don't know, man. There's something about the Patriot helmet, man. Yeah. Red, white, and blue, baby. Well, yeah, love red, white, and blue. Patriot helmet, boring. I'm with you. I do like their old white helmets. Yeah, with Pat the Patriot. Pat the Patriot, yeah. Dude, I love that.
I love that helmet. I love that look they wear when they wear their red jerseys. The old Seahawk helmet is a cooler helmet, too. And their old colors came much better. Yeah. Yeah, why is that? Why is all the old stuff just better? Because it's nostalgia for us, or was it just better? I just think what was old once always comes back again. That's just the way it is.
I thought, were you wearing bell bottoms last night? No, I was not. Oh, by the way, I forgot this. What's that? You forgot your game ball from last night. There you go. Greg Giannotti won Legends Meet at Tellers. There you go, handsome. Thank you very much. Thank you. That is awesome. It was a great night for the foundation and happy to be a part of it again.
And hopefully we have another great one next year. And you auctioned off three golf matches with us. I did. Three more days. I mean, to wonderful people. Don't get me wrong. I like it. Yeah. I mean, it's a lot of golf, but it's all for a good cause. These are people who won the auctions. Yes. And we're going to be there and we're going to have a great time.

Chapter 5: How do weather conditions affect player performance in championship games?
That you're the one who cares, so that's why it comes up.
It's a fair point. We want to make you happy. It's a fair point. It really is. Yeah, when I wanted to go to the afternoon and I floated that idea by you guys.
Take a hike because I'm out of here. That would have been everyday thing, though. Yeah, I know. Afternoons. Yeah. And now Jerry, who was planning on being home, had heard now that I'm coming in. So now he feels that he can't be the only guy who's not in.
This is what happens. This is a discussion point here.
We needed your leadership how you got rid of the softball team in this situation to not come in.
You know what? I could see you going to Omaha Beach. What are we doing? Why are we going here? That's apples to apples. Listen, I don't want to be the guy where you're saying you couldn't make it in. I don't want to deal with that.
But I honestly think that, especially when we're talking about who's going to be in the Super Bowl, that it does the show a terrible disservice if me and you are in different places. And I know I can get in, have a hotel room, and then set up a plan for home so the show doesn't suffer. I don't think the show suffers if Jerry's at home. I don't think the show suffers if Al is at home.
I just suffer because I have to do half their jobs. See, that's the other thing. What's that now? When they're not here, I screen, which actually could be a fun thing. Yeah. And I play Jerry's highlights instead of him playing the highlights. Okay. But you've done it before. Of course. You're a great teammate, though. Any remote, that's the case. No question. Great teammate.
I just, I think that we need to, we are a tough group. We all know we care about this show. Yeah, we're tougher. But I think sometimes, I do think, and we've powered through a lot of situations. I do think, though, that there are times that we make bad decisions because we don't want to feel like wusses.
