Hour 4 - We Talk Head Coaching Moves, Updates on Harbaugh, Mahomes, Divisional Round Picks
16 Jan 2026
Chapter 1: What is the main topic discussed in this episode?
It's the Boomer and Geo podcast from WFAN. Boomer and Geo coming to you live from the Bill Ford Tough Studio on the fan end. CBS Sports Network. Feel good football Friday. 888-808-1019 is the Red Pocket mobile fan line. It's brought to you by your new ultimate cell carrier. Red Pocket mobile. Been a lot about... Kyle Tucker going to the Dodgers, and now baseball continues to have this issue.
Obviously, we've talked about that plenty, and divisional playoff weekend, and also John Harbaugh. I'm really curious, the next most coveted coach, what that is going to be, because it doesn't necessarily have to be the most coveted, but what team is going to get their guy next? Who is going to strike, and who is going to be the one...
that multiple people are after because multiple people are after John Harbaugh. The Giants made sure that John Harbaugh didn't see multiple teams. I do believe that Jesse Minter is someone that people really, really like. I know that Chris Shula is someone that they really, really like. I know that Clint Kubiak is someone that they like. Kevin Stefanski is going to get these interviews.
Mike Tomlin's not. He's out of the mix. for coaching next year. So who is it going to be and where?
It's kind of interesting. It's got to come from maybe this group of coaches that are coaching in these games this weekend. Well, Rob Sala is another one. Yeah, yeah.

Chapter 2: What are the latest head coaching moves in the NFL?
I mean, so you would think that it's going to be one of these guys or, you know, I was surprised that Kevin Stefanski hasn't gotten something yet. Well, him and Atlanta, maybe.
Maybe they're waiting for somebody.
Again, I told you, there is a connection there with Matt Ryan and Kevin. I don't know how well they know each other, but I know that they have a very close mutual acquaintance that both have worked with. I do know that, and I don't know if that will play into this or not, but it's interesting.
I do think that the Steelers are going to try to recreate what they did with the three coaches that they had previously. So that's why a Chris Shula or a Clint Kubiak or a Clay Kubiak, somebody like that, makes sense for the Steelers.
I think when Art Rooney sits down with those guys and they talk to him about their running game and the way that they want to call their offense, it probably is going to fit
their eye you know what i mean yeah and uh they're gonna be young they're gonna be aggressive and they're gonna you know when a young man gets a job opportunity like this they buy into it all the way as an older guy sometimes you know they they they miss some things i hope that's something i don't think that'll be the case with john mara and i mean uh john harbaugh in this case simply because i think he's going to be reinvigorated to get the giants back to where they belong
It really does feel like Rob Sala is going to get another job after just one year away. That's what it feels like. He's getting a ton of interviews, and he's doing these interviews during this week. They're not in-person interviews, but they're Zoom interviews, which means that there's multiple teams after him, and he's not going to wait.
And if he can wash that jet stink off of him in one year and get another head coaching job, that's impressive.
I think that... I would imagine just knowing him and being around him as much as we were, he can charm anybody. And he'll come off commanding. He'll come off like he's organized. And he'll come off like, you know, I learned a lot in the previous spot that I made some mistakes. I'm not going to make those same mistakes. And I think that somebody's really, really going to jump on him. I really do.

Chapter 3: What updates are there on John Harbaugh's coaching situation?
Understood they have injuries. Everyone's got injuries. But I just wanted to just highlight that fact. And I believe he does qualify under the Rooney rule. So they could do a quick zoom, check off that box, and then move on with candidates that they really do feel is a better head coach fit.
Yeah, listen, obviously that happens, Jordan, and there may be one of these teams that is thinking that way. You can't rule it out, but I do think Rob Sala is someone who is highly respected. People look at the Jets being the Jets, what ruined him, and it wasn't his fault. People saw how the Jets fell apart after he got fired at 2-3 last season. and players absolutely love the guy.
So, I mean, you're really grasping at straws if you say the 13th worst. Like, I understand that's still, like, in the bottom half, but, like, if you're the second worst, third worst, worst.
I think they've lost four of their top defensive players that were all pros, you know.
Fred Warner.
Nick Posa. Nick Posa, yeah. I mean, they've lost some of their best players, and, you know, quite frankly, they're known more for their offense now, obviously, under Brock Purdy and Kyle Shanahan and Christian McCaffrey than they have been about their defense.
I thought their defense was, when Rob was first there and they were going to Super Bowls, I would say, yeah, they were really known for their defense because everybody was pretty healthy and he had a great defense and a great look on TV. And he still has a great look on TV. Oh, sure. He's still very, very animated with his players. You can see his players love him and the owners love that.
Women love him, too. They do. Okay, well, that's good.
When he was here, he was highly... I don't want to say sought after.

Chapter 4: What does Dan Soder say about Mike McDaniel's firing?
So is this smoking your butt? I don't think there's no way that John Harbaugh is taking the Mara family and the Giants all through all of this and not signing a contract.
I mean, I would agree. The Giants themselves put out that smirk face emoji. You're not doing that if John Harbaugh's going somewhere else. Palisaro to stick it. What the hell is he doing, man? Ruining our fun on this Feel Good Friday? Well, that's where I felt bad. You just mentioned this whole Feel Good Friday and I have these clips that are kind of a little concerning.
But you say... Oh, that would be a kick in the nuts. Maybe the dolphins back in the mix?
No, no. Pellicero. He's a part of that. Those insiders, Rappaport, Pellicero, and Garofalo, right? Oh, yeah. They call themselves the insiders on the NFL Network.
Oh, okay. Those guys.
Schefters.
He's on the ESPN.
Yeah.
So, I mean, the thing about it is it was bad enough to wake up to the Kyle Tucker news. Right, because I was thinking that Kyle Tucker was coming to the Mets yesterday at 6 o'clock. Yeah, I was too at 2 o'clock. And I kept refreshing my Twitter account to see if it was happening. When's it happening? When's it happening? It's supposed to be happening.

Chapter 5: How does the coaching carousel affect team dynamics?
He'll take it around the net. He'll take it the long way around and stop on the hash marks. Barzell, Ritchie in tight. Duclari scores! The scoreless tie broken. A power play goal with 6.18 to play.
And that was it. Brendan Burke on MSG. 1-0 was the final as the Isles win in Edmonton. Duclari the goal. Ilya Sorokin, 35 saves on the night for the Isles.
That was Alva passed by Cal Ritchie, man. Jeez.
You know, it's a good hockey team right there, Boomer. I actually was going to put on an Islander jersey today and did not because I thought it would piss you off. And I was like, I don't want him in a bad mood. Rangers didn't play last night. No. Yeah, but he just, you know, it's like salt in the wound.
It's like the Jets getting, the Jet fans getting fired up that Harbaugh's a giant coach and beginning to annoy it. It's like they win a game out in Edmonton. He said it. The Rangers play in Edmonton. They would have lost 12-0. So I was just like, you know what? We've got the Tucker thing already. He's going to be sour about that. Let's just stay away from the hockey. That's what I was thinking.
Fair enough. I appreciate that.
Thank you.
Moment of the day. This is a little bit different than normal because it's usually about you guys, but I heard a big laugh in the newsroom, so I went back to find it, and it was this listener that didn't like the serious tone of the show today, and so he called in with a story to kind of loosen things up a little bit.
Today's been way too serious, so I got to share a story. Okay. Yesterday, I go down to the store. I figured I'm going to grab my stuff for my playoff football, whatever. Long story short, I'm walking out the door. This lady's in front of me. I'm 60 years old. She's probably my age and beyond beautiful, whatever. She needs help getting her stuff to the car. I said, let me give you a hand.
