Hey everyone, welcome to Breaking In with Kevin Fishbane, the podcast that tells the origin stories of your favorite sports media personalities. It's episode 60, and my guest is John Boog Shambhi, play-white play broadcaster of the Chicago Cubs, I'm Marquee, and the voice of Sunday Night Baseball on ESPN Radio. Boog also does play a play for college basketball on ESPN. And we actually recorded this episode during college hoop season in February, fresh off a big like twelve tilts that Boog called. You're gonna hear how he made his way from high school baseball star in New York City, eventually to Boston College, where he started doing sports radio with his classmates, Bob Wishkusin and Joe Tessitor.
Boog's journey then goes to Bradford, Pennsylvania, a one-night stint making donuts, and then he went to Miami, lived on Wishcoosin's couch, got his nickname Boog the first day he was running the board. It was the mid nineties when sports radio exploded. Boog got to do a lot at WQAM, from sports updates to going to games to hosting a sports talk show, which was his original goal, but he would go into an empty broadcast booth at Marlin's Games and call the game into a tape recorder. Thirty years later, Boog is one of the voices synonymous with baseball. You'll hear what led to his opportunity to call Marlin's games for real. Before we get to Boog, a reminder of recent episodes. The the show being able to be the voice of a video game is something that a guy I read you grew up listening to could have never imagined, and that was Harry Callis. Yeah, I voice the Phillies. Yeah, I voice the film.
Yeah. I I loved Harry Callis. I got to meet him when I was doing the Marlins and I was legitimately in line in the press room for dinner. I think this was like back yeah, I think I I believe it was back in the day before you had to pay. And I wasn't really paying attention to who was ahead of me and then all of a sudden you hear like, I'll have some lasagna, some green beans and I was like, Oh my god. And then I got to meet him and then you talking to him and you feel like your voice is Hi Harry. It's nice to meet you.

I like playing, man, you know, so I think I was I was uh I've always had from a very young age. I was a kid who liked to play. I think the other thing was that I was not scared of adults. So even as a young kid, I was the type of kid that would be I grew up in a city. So but you'd be in an elevator, and if somebody engaged me and was like, What's going on? I'd be like, Yeah, not much. You know. What I mean, just as a just as a c so like th that was sort of the foundation of it. But I was interested in being on the field, you know, that was that's what I You know, my dream was growing up watching, you know, Mike Schmidt play.
Well I've got uh April twenty first, nineteen eighty eight. A little sentence in Newsday. Uh it was um Regis, am I pronouncing that right? Your high school? Yeah. Uh you guys beat Rice nine to two and right there, John Shambh three for four with four RBI. Oh boy.
