This is because man's primary essence - the part that he calls "I" - is the soul, which is the partof him that is eternal" (OR "which is the essence that is eternal") (Breslev Research translation) 2. Likutei Halachot, Orach Chaim (Laws of Daily Life) - The Laws of Shabbat - Law 7, Part 74 "Because the essence of a person - the part that he calls "I" - is only the neshama (soul) (as it is written in the lesson 'A Seal within a Seal' Likutei Moharan 22 Part 1). Therefore, when we are speaking with someone in person and we say to him 'you,' the primary intention is to the soul, which is the essence of a person as is known."
