Chapter 1: What funny meet-cute story does the listener share?
Hi, I'm Dani Shapiro.
We were in the car, like a rolling stone came on, and he said, there's a line in there about your mother.
And I said, what?
What I would do if I didn't feel like I was being accepted is choose an identity that other people can't have.
I knew something had happened to me in the middle of the night, but I couldn't hold on to what had happened.

Dr. Laurie Santos from the Happiness Lab here. It's the season of giving, and this year my podcast, The Happiness Lab, is partnering with GiveDirectly, a nonprofit that provides people in extreme poverty with the cash they need as part of the Pods Fight Poverty campaign. Our goal this year is to raise $1 million, which will bring over 700 families out of extreme poverty.
Your donation will put cash directly in the hands of these families in need. And they'll get to decide how to use it, whether that's school transportation, purchasing livestock, or starting a business. Plus, if you're a first-time donor, your gift will be matched by giving multiplier, which means more money for those in need. Visit givedirectly.org slash happiness lab to learn more and to donate.

Chapter 2: How did Nick and Sydney meet on the pickleball court?
What are the cycles fathers pass down that sons are left to heal? What if being a man wasn't about holding it all together, but learning how to let go?
This is a space where men speak truth and find the power to heal and transform. I'm Mike Della Rocha. Welcome to Sacred Lessons. Listen to Sacred Lessons on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Hi, I'm Radhi Devlukia, and I am the host of A Really Good Cry podcast. This week, I am joined by Anna Runkle, also known as the Crappy Childhood Fairy, a creator, teacher, and guide helping people heal from the lasting emotional wounds of unsafe or chaotic childhoods.
Talking about trauma isn't always great for people. It's not always the best thing. About a third of people who are traumatized as kids feel worse when they talk about it, get very dysregulated.

Every great romantic story usually starts with some kind of awkward funny meet cute.
Yeah, that's true.
Like she accidentally trips on her yoga mat and falls right underneath his downward dog. Oh, hello. Or she accidentally sneezed into her flaming shot of Everclear and caught his pants on fire. Better than his eyebrows. One of our listeners apparently met someone in a funny, awkward kind of way. His name is Nick, and I can't wait to hear his story.
I can't wait to hear who was injured during this meet-cute. Yeah, let's find out.

Chapter 4: What was the vibe during Nick and Sydney's time at the farmer's market?
Nick, welcome to the show. Hey, thank you so much for taking my call. He's like, I've been a full body cast. It was so adorable. Thank you for calling me. We'll learn about that. You are going to be kind of like our Ryan Gosling for this, but even more charming, I'm sure. So tell us the name of the woman that you met and how you two came to be.
um the woman her name is sydney and we met on a pickleball court actually i went by a pickleball court the other night and it was packed like i didn't believe it like you have to rotate and play with the older people but yeah okay so were you at brooks senior citizen pickleball tournament is that where you met him Uh, no, I was doing league night with my friends. And how'd you meet?
What was her name again? I'm sorry.
Sydney.
Okay.

Chapter 5: How did Nick attempt to kiss Sydney at the end of their date?
We, uh, we were playing mixed doubles and while we were playing, there was a rally and I hit the ball and struck her right in the chest. Well, it's a pickleball. They're made to be not pickles. Yeah, but it still sucks. Like, if you hit someone in the neck with a tennis ball, it still sucks. But did you celebrate because you got the point? Yeah. No. I'm going to mock her a little bit.
Bro, you better say no. No, no. Okay. And so after the game, we usually go out and have a drink. And so we invited them, and I pick up the first round because I felt bad about hitting this woman I've never met before.
Yeah.
Chapter 6: What was Sydney's reaction to Nick's kiss attempt?
But you're playing mixed doubles, so she's with a guy, right? Well, she was with a guy, but it was not so much she was seeing. Oh, okay, cool. Yeah, yeah. That's a good call, though, Brooke. Yeah, I mean, I just assume always that they're together. Yeah, that should be actually a rule in pickleball, that if you have a partner, you have to kiss.
but we'll work on the pickleball rules later so you took sydney and it sounds like a bunch of people went out to get drinks afterwards and yeah i think there was like six of us um but sydney and i talked for a while and realized that we had more in common than just pickleball oh that's cool it was really nice actually because i wasn't going there to meet anyone oh that's great at what point of the night did it dawn on you like oh my god this could be something
Um, I feel like the fact that she never went away to talk to somebody else, I was like, oh, she's staying here talking to me. Oh, that's cute. That's a good point, man. It's good to pick that up. Are you saying is this the date that you were on with her or was there another meetup afterwards? Oh, I'm sorry. I'm being slow here.
Chapter 7: What reasons did Sydney give for not wanting to go on a second date?
This leads to another date. Oh, this is just a meet? Okay, so we better get to that other date. We only have so much time in this segment. Yeah, tell us about that. So I was like, I'm going to the farmer's market tomorrow morning. Do you want to come? Oh, my God. Dude, hold on. Hold on. I got to stop you as a guy. Were you really going to the farmer's market or did you know this is perfect?
Well, I do know that there is a farmer's market. Okay. It was a move.
Chapter 8: What final thoughts did Nick have about his experience with Sydney?
But it's cute. That's a great idea. It's a cute date. Okay. So we went to this huge farmer's market. I've actually never been before.
Okay.
That's great. What is this? Okay. And we walked all around and it was really fun. And then after that, we walked to a park and walked all around this huge park also. And we were together for like three hours. Oh my goodness. Walking, talking. Getting your steps in. Getting in and stuff. I can't believe you said getting your steps in in a sexy way. You guys clocking miles?
Three hours of straight walking is a lot. That's true. No, for real. You felt like you were connecting, obviously. Yeah, and then I walked her back to her car, and I was feeling the vibe, and I leaned in for a kiss, and she did this, like, old-timey comedian thing where she, like, went straight down like it was an elevator. Oh, like she bent down, like, physically? Like, she literally ducked.
Yeah, ducked. Was that a joke? No, I don't think so. I ended up kissing, like, the top of her hair. How did you recover from that? What did you say? I was just like, all right, see ya, I'll see ya. You didn't push the up button to get the elevator back up to the top floor where you're at? Come on. Or just push her down to the ground. That's so awkward.
That's kind of brutal, man.
For both of you. Yes, I feel that. And so then, you know, I haven't, she hasn't texted me back since then, so. How long ago was the farmer's market meetup? It was about a week ago. Do you think it's just the ending, the kiss? I don't know. I feel like I did something. Something happened. But since I don't know what it is, it's kind of driving me crazy. Okay.
Well, why would she stick around that long? Like, if she wasn't feeling it. I mean, don't get me wrong. Some people just like to kiss.
right away especially like on the fourth date we'll kiss i mean your broad daylight broad daylight kissing in a parking lot is different than end of the night type like had a couple drinks yeah yeah that's not really the vibe okay yeah it's pretty embarrassing uh but i just didn't know it was at that and if it is that i think that's something you can come back from i would think that but since she didn't respond i thought maybe yeah there's something else
