What is the main topic discussed in this episode?
I'm Ben and I'm Ernie and you're listening to Budget Nerds. You are not alone. No, you are not. Well, folks, today we have a very special topic and a very special guest. We are talking about the future of YNAB. We're talking about the future of the app and where we're going. And we're going to be talking about some of our newest feature releases. We've had a lot in the past three or four months. It's been a roller coaster ride, so there's a lot to talk about. And we're going to talk about how some of those features point to where we're headed. And it's a really exciting topic here.
And to help us do that, we're joined by Todd Curtis, CEO of YNAB and a key part of the YNAB team since 2010. Todd has done a lot of big things around YNAB. He's headed up customer support and product, He's led the design team. And then as of February 2021, he's been serving as CEO. So Todd has seen YNAB from just about every single angle. And when it comes to the future of YNAB, there's no one better to talk to because Todd spends every day thinking about the best way to move YNAB forward. And friends, I'm not just saying that because YNAB holds my YNAB career in his hands. That's a joke, by the way. I say that because I see it, I hear it, I feel it week in and week out from Todd. And Ben, I'm sure you would say the same thing.
So Todd, welcome to the show. Fantastic to have you here. Welcome, Todd.
Thank you so much, both of you. It's wild you haven't been on the show before.
I know. What's the deal?
Yeah, this should have happened a long time ago, I feel like. Because every decision, I mean, you're behind it, right? And you've been everywhere at YNAB. Like Ernie said, you've started customer support. You moved to product. You moved away from product and back to product. I mean, you've seen everything, right? Yeah. Yeah, a decade and a half is a long time, apparently.
So yeah, it's been a real treat to be able to sit in different spots around YNAB over that time, learn quite a bit.
Well, before we hear more, I think we have one task we need to get done. You've got to prove to everybody that you are a true budget nerd. So how are you going to do that? I think I can do this. You are the CEO of YNAB. I should, yeah.
Who is Todd Curtis and how did he become YNAB's CEO?
I feel like that should work, right? But give us the story. Give us some credentials. How long have you been using YNAB and how long have you been planning or spending? Sure.
So I'll start with how long I've been using YNAB. And then I have some, actually, I brought some visual proof of my nerdness. I don't know what you call it. I started... using YNAB before, I started using the YNAB method before I started using YNAB, the product. Because when I discovered YNAB, it was PC only. And I was Mac at the time, this is 2008 or so. Okay. So I started getting involved in the conversation on our old forum and just kind of picking up on getting every dollar a job. And then I started using YNAB itself with YNAB 3 as a beta tester when that came out in the fall of 2009.
That's super interesting. I didn't know you were in the forums even before you used the product.
Oh, absolutely. Yeah, yeah, absolutely. Looking for something and not satisfied, I ran through every financial product budgeting app, everything that you could imagine. I guess it's pre-smartphone now, so I don't even know if to say app is correct. But I tried them all and found YNAB and thought, this is going to be the one, but then realized I couldn't use it yet.
Like the old story of the very first sale that Jesse made back in the day. He had to refund because it was something with a Mac and it was an Excel spreadsheet and that didn't work with Macs back then.
Yeah. So I really, I wanted it early. I knew that the team was working on a version that would work on a Mac, and I thought, I want to get my hands on this as soon as I can. And so this is actually how I met and became friends with Jesse, was writing to him and saying, I want this version you're working on. Make me a beta tester. Okay. And so that's how I got my hands on YNAB 3.
And so that's how you get a job at YNAB, even today.
