Vietnam profileert zich als heel beschaafd, efficiënt en vriendelijk landwaar toeristen meer dan welkom zijn en het goed investeren is. Het land trekt toeristen met het heerlijke eten, de idyllische stranden en historische stadjes. Een land vol vriendelijk lachende mensen. Waar iedereen zich welkom voelt. Dat Vietnam ondertussen een zeer autoritaire staat is die beroerd omgaat met dissidenten en minderheden, valt tegen die achtergrond min of meer weg. Antropoloog en Vietnam-deskundige Oscar Salemink is te gast over de schaduwzijde van Vietnam.
