Welcome to the Busted Open After Dark podcast. I'm your host, Tommy Dreamer, talking everything AEW dynamite from El Paso, Texas, and what a night it was for Kevin Knight. This is the Busted Open. Podcast. Gotta open up with the beginning with MJF and Kevin Knight in an excellent uh title match. Uh MJF man, I love watching him work. I love watching him be the bad guy. When I watched this match, it had a lot of stuff that I remembered seeing it firsthand. It uh different styles. But listen, Kevin Knight will be a main player within AEW. He's already stepped up big time. Uh tonight was not the night for Kevin Knight, but uh we'll get into that. Um I thought Kevin did a great job of portraying Uh incredible challenger.
What made Kevin Knight’s match against MJF the standout opener of AEW Dynamite?
We've seen him in tag matches. We've seen him in trios matches. We've also saw him get a few upsets in the Continental Classic, and here he is facing MJF. I really enjoyed the match, like I said, it reminded me of a lot of stuff that I had seen, but just different. Um it reminded me of sometimes Masado Tanaka versus Mike Awesome. It reminded me sometimes of Rob Van Damme and Tommy Dreamer. It reminded me sometimes of Sabu and Rob Van Dam, some intricate spots and intricate movesets that the fans Really, really enjoyed. My favorite part of a lot of this was two things. When people want to criticize different types of styles or this high-paced um type of match or when they, you know, say there's no psychology, there's no um
rhyme or reason for people to do stuff and I will look at this match and say everything they did made sense. The match built. Um they had a great pace. They never took their foot off the gas pedal until both men were so tired and they had to. They pulled out so many big moves and so many I'm trying to win. Kevin Knight looked like he was trying to win the world title. MJF looked like he was trying to retain his title and he did a great job of also making his challenger even credible. And it's not saying that Kevin Knight's not credible. He's new as a singles wrestler. I I'm a big fan, man, and I will continue to be a big fan if I see matches like this. Like I said, he could be very much so your next level.
contender or a singles champion. He has to work on some things, but has nothing to do with his in ring. Um that match built it built to a nice crescendo. It built for a struggle. It also built for um The Rob Van Dam Coast to Coast, which they got a lot of miles out of both guys, stayed down and sold. When I say things that remind me of it also reminded me of they didn't have the time, but I'm looking at MJF from somebody I've known as a kid. and I'm watched him mature into a man and be the world champion for a reason. There were parts of this where it reminded me of Sting and Ric Flair when they did that famous forty-five minute match that was a match that helped put Sting on the map. And there are defining matches, there are defining moments that really do help elevate a a baby face especially to that next level.
And I felt that this match did at the end of the day, MJF won in controversial fashion. Uh the ref had gotten involved. MJF did everything in his power to make it look like Kevin Knight was going to win and the most part about it was the audience believed in it. And the two guys went at it, had a different type of world title match. Um and MJF retains, which I really, really enjoyed. Then here comes the aftermath. You could have settled right then and there with just that, and now we're gonna go with the aftermath because again, MJF is a jerk and he's a marked man being the world champion. Kevin Knight also holds the trios title with Hangman Page, who has a match set up with MJF. And like I said, the beauty of this match, because if you looked at it on paper, we're trying to get to a bigger pay per view where Hangman Page is on the marquee to face MJF and you're like, Yeah, there's no way they're gonna change that match or they're gonna beat MJF going into that match.
But MJF and Kevin Knight made it like, oh yes, Kevin um May win. and become the world champion.
