Welcome to the Busted Open Podcast. This is Dave LaGreca. On today's episode, myself and Bully Ray talk about CM Punk, your new WWE Undisputed Champion. We break it all down right here on the Busted Open Podcast.
What significant event happened during CM Punk's return to WWE?
this is the busted open podcast one of my favorite moments the last 20 years in pro wrestling cm punk beat john cena for that wwe championship and escaped through the crowd and almost as michael cole said 15 years to today same place same city and CM Punk wins for an eighth time and exits through the crowd. I thought that was a pretty damn cool moment last night on Monday Night Raw, Bully.
Hell of a callback to that moment in time. And that was in 2011, correct? 2011, yep. And Punk put the championship in the refrigerator that night, and he did again last night.
And they were supposed to... It should have been... Because you always talk about the follow-up. The follow-up should have been bigger because he was hijacking the title. And he said in that famous promo, right, because that was just before that match, was the pipe bomb. When he talked about, hell, I might take it to Ring of Honor. I might take it to New Japan.
How does CM Punk's championship win compare to his previous victories?
And then basically he was off of TV for one week and they had him back on TV. Just so frustrating that they could have made that story so much better and bigger than they did. But it's a new time, and we're leading towards SummerSlam, Bully. And we talked about this yesterday. You said, all right, what can they do here? All right, Sami Zayn is facing Cody Rhodes. Maybe we don't get Punk. Maybe we get Kevin Owens. Maybe CM Punk comes out at the end of the match. Maybe Sami retains. Maybe Cody wins. But we get what we get at the beginning of the show last night, which is Gunther attacking Cody Rhodes. And I got to tell you. Great job. I mean, blood does mean something in pro wrestling when it's used right.
When Gunther kicked that car door into Cody's head and he saw that blood pouring out of Cody's ear, that was an amazing visual. And you knew right there, Bully, that Cody is out. And that started the rumble of CM Punk. And that's exactly what we got in that main event. CM Punk versus Sami Zayn. CM Punk captures the championship. And now Sami Zayn is in the rearview mirror. And Punk's sights are SummerSlam August 1st and 2nd in Minnesota. Your thoughts?
Everything the WWE did last night with Cody, with Gunther, with Punk... with Sammy, with Nick, with Adam. It all worked. We talked about several scenarios on the show last night. We talked about several scenarios yesterday morning that could happen on the show last night. None of those scenarios played out, but it doesn't matter because the scenario that the WWE came up with, Grand Slam. Loved it. It worked. If you're going to do it, let's do it. Of everything that I saw last night, there's a moment in time that I loved more than anything else. And to me, this set the tone for the match. And it's so small, Dave, so I'll just ask if you picked up on it. the entrance no so i'll tell you when punk gets in well it's part of his entrance but when punk gets in the ring and sammy walks to punk and they're face to face out of nowhere sammy mushes punk right in the face
And that got a gasp from the audience. And that slight little mush shoving Punk's head meant so much. I don't think Punk knew it was coming. And look at his eyes afterwards. Look at his face light up afterwards. He was like, oh, okay, Mother Trucker. This is the way it's going to be? And I love those little things that the boys don't talk about, but they do anyway because we know what the job is. I think that fired Punk up. I think it fired Sammy up. I know it fired the crowd up because I heard the reaction to it.
I love it. And I mentioned the entrance and I love the entrance last night because it was completely different than you usually get. They're chanting CM Punk, CM Punk. You usually get the shh and then cult of personality hits. And that wasn't the case. They go into the back of the arena and that garage door opens and there's CM Punk standing there and they don't hit the music.
