So today we're talking about the connection between our own well being and the well being of the planet and what can happen when we take a little bit of time to notice that connection. Pat Kane is with me, sustainability advocate and founder of Reuse. So Pat, this is a concept that I'm I'm trying to get my head around and it's getting away from me. So tell me tell me what we mean here.
Pat Kane 0:32
So yes, so either uh if if I'm working with individuals through, as you mentioned, their reusy or even clients frontaries, um one thing I see in common all the time is the fact that we have lost the ability of zooming out and really looking at the choices we're making on a daily basis and asking ourselves, is this the best for me, for myself as an individual, for the planet? It for the collective good. So it's the art of noticing. That's what we're trying to call it. So
Clare Byrne 1:03
is this connected to overwhelm when it comes to to climate action?
Pat Kane 1:07
Yeah, it can be. Like sometimes we overcomplicate things. Sometimes we feel like we're just one. And like, what good can I make if I'm only one person? And the reality is, imagine if only one person everywhere you look was trying a little bit harder every day. Imagine the size of that impact. So there's a lot more power in us, you know, we don't have to get that. feeling of overwhelmed or paralyzed because there's so much happening out there and feel so much like bigger than us. There are things we can make, uh can do and and they they start with simply asking questions, you know pausing to
Clare Byrne 1:41
notice,
Pat Kane 1:41
you say. So what what do you what what do you want us to notice? So basically I suppose, you know, if we walk through a morning of yourself, myself or anyone out there, either you go to school or or work, whatever it is that your your day will take you, you're gonna wake up You're gonna look after yourself, maybe have a shower, maybe apply some makeup, you know, um dress yourself, you're going to eat something and then find a way to get to where you need to be. Right. There are hundreds of choices you're making in there without even thinking, as I said, full autopilot. So if you think of personal care, personal hygiene, you know, let's start counting and maybe you want to help me with that. Okay. So we're looking at brushing teeth.
Pat Kane 2:23
There's a toothbrush, there's a toothpaste, maybe there's a mouthwash. Three ingredients three products there already. Yeah, and a load of ingredients that I wouldn't know how to spend. But I'm
Clare Byrne 2:32
thinking
Pat Kane 2:33
about all of the plastic and then I'm also thinking
Clare Byrne 2:35
about dental floss. Which is often plastic.
Pat Kane 2:38
Most of the time. So four, duh. We're looking at our showers, their shampoo, there's maybe conditioner, face wash, uh body wash, and maybe a scrub even. So we're looking at nine. And then when you get into makeup, if you're into it, you know, the world is your oyster because I wouldn't know how to apply half of those things, but I'm sure like if you're into it There's dozens of things you could be doing. And the skincare before you put the makeup on. Thank you very much. There you go. As clearly I'm not quite there yet. So there's dozens. So the the environmental working group, which is like an organization that has run this research around how many products we use and how many chemicals we're exposed to.
Pat Kane 3:15
Has noticed that for men we're looking at an average of eight products, and that is before you take a sip of your coffee, okay? Eight products touching your skin, around sixty different ingredients, okay? And for women that is the double.
Clare Byrne 3:29
Okay. At
Pat Kane 3:29
a bare minimum, we're looking at twelve products with over 168 ingredients touching your skin. So what are
Clare Byrne 3:35
what are you asking us to do? Are we saying that we should be asking ourselves, do I really need this or should can I use an alternative?
Pat Kane 3:40
I'm trying to to highlight that, you know, a lot of those things are not only impacting our health, you know, our energy levels. um our skin even in this case, but also the planet, the collective, right?
