The Gallagher Dublin Horse Show is in full swing at the RDS today with thousands of visitors enjoying one of Ireland's biggest sporting and social events. Today is Best Dressed Day where competitors are vying for a €10,000 prize while visitors can also experience the new Leia Arena grandstand and a special exhibition marking 100 years of the Aga Khan Nations Cup. Well, Henry McKean visited the RDS and sent this report.

Fiona, we've got this brand new stadium, the Leia Arena behind us. It's very impressive. What can people expect coming to the Horse Show?
Well, they can first and foremost expect top-class international competition and top-class national competition. So we've had a series of qualifier events running up to the show, 33 days. and all the top Irish riders and producers will be here. Today we have Best Dressed Day at the RDS as well, so it's a huge social and cultural event, a huge event for the ladies and gentlemen who like to get dressed up for the day, so a great day out. We have lots of bars and restaurants, champagne bar, our new Blue Ribbon restaurant in the Grandstand, so lots to see and lots to do. A new kids zone as well, so...
And there's a lovely vibe. How would you describe the horse show vibe?
The horse show vibe, it's just electric. We have all the equestrian people here from around the country, but also a great mix of general public for a day out. So the atmosphere is really electric here. We've lots of winners already, red rosettes, and everyone's excited to be here.
Are you enjoying the horse show?
Yeah, it's really nice here.

So all the way from County Clare.

And do you keep horses? A few at home, yeah. So this is like a dream for you? It is. This is the first year coming up now. This is your first time? Yeah. And what's your impression?
I think it's class. I'll be up again next year now, definitely. I might come for the weekend though.
Yeah, I think it's been great so far. It was good to come up and see what the horse show was like because I've never been to it before. So it's a bit like a posh ploughing, isn't it? Yeah, there's plenty of people around the place and it's lively enough.
Well, I'm happy because my daughter's happy.
When she's happy, her parents are happy.
And she loves horses, so it's great.
It's a great day out for her. And it's a great day out for us. We're enjoying it.
How many years have you been coming to the horse show? You tell me.
What can visitors expect from the new Laya Arena and other facilities?
Since 1953-ish. Wow. So since you were a child? Yeah. Every year. And what is it you love about it? Horses. Horses! You love them.
That's right. I love the atmosphere and how everyone comes together, whether they're horsey or not. Everyone seems to just come and enjoy the day out.
You've travelled all the way from Longford to be here.
Yeah. How come? We come every year. It's kind of a tradition. It's such a lovely atmosphere. It's lovely to see everyone happy and enjoying themselves.
What do you love about the horse show?
I love getting to come and see my friends and just enjoy the day out, especially when there's great weather.
Why did you make the effort to come all the way out to the RDS? I love coming for the jumping and for the shopping. The jumping and the shopping? Yeah.
Why do locals and families love the atmosphere of the horse show?
I love going shopping. And I love going watching all the horses jump as well. Brian McConville and this is my wife. Connie. Connie McConville. We're 40 years married this year. Congratulations. We were just saying on our way down here this morning that we come here 42 years ago. It was our first time to the horse show together. So you got together here 42 years ago or you were together already? We were already together but this was our first, one of our first big trips out together was to come to Dublin Horse Show. And what is it you love about it? Oh just look around you, everything, the ambience, the people, the atmosphere. It's just the show, the setting. It's pretty impressive, isn't it? It really is very, very impressive.
