Martin will address the UN General Assembly in New York today. The US President, though, Donald Trump, is back in Washington, whereas he is hosting the Chinese President Xi Jinping. Sean Defoe, News Talks political correspondent, is in New York for us now and he joins us. So Sean, before we talk about uh the the US President uh and his Chinese uh situation, the visit that's happening there. I just want to talk about what's been happening between America and Iran because both sides walked out when the other was presenting at the UN General Assembly. So it looks as though there is no communication happening there.

But then we hear that there are shuttle talks going on. Wha what is going on? What's happening?
Yeah, there will there there were sort of talks going on uh with Steve Witkoff from the US and with some Iranian um uh delegation as well, sort of on the side of this. But the the extent and who uh is looking for what of that is quite garbled. And Donald Trump wa was saying that, you know, we've basically totally disarmed Iran, uh we've destroyed them as a country and we can now choose whether to to totally blast them to hell, as I think he said in his speech or put them on the road to hell, uh, or to try and get them some sort of peace to let them rebuild. And the Iranians totally rejected that yesterday when their president gave a speech to the UN said that they will never bend the knee, they will never bow to an aggressor and uh argued that far from being the terrorists and the biggest sponsor of world terror as Donald Trump put them, they were the ones having acts of terror committed against them.

Donald Trump trying to link this again, as we mentioned the other day, to their elections, the midterm elections. Elections coming up in six weeks, the Iranian president basically said we d we don't care about your elections. This is not about that. Um so the argument that Trump has been putting forward that there is a deal that is imminent uh just seems totally unlikely.
Talks are happening, but talks have been happening for a long time without any realistic and and uh firm solution coming forward.
Now the British Prime Minister Andy Burnham he used his time at the General Assembly to focus on Russia and Ukraine and also the future of AI, which is a a major topic there. Michal Martin will be speaking later today, around one AM our our time.

So we're still waiting to get the kind of the full speech, but I mean um we can have a good stab at the gist of it. So he is obviously going to talk about some of the points that have been raised by the Irish delegation through this week. That is the various conflicts that are going on around the world and the UN's role uh in getting involved and ending them. And it's sort of a bit of a tightrope balance because a lot of the leaders this week have been critical of the UN and sa because of all those wars that are going on, this is a body that is meant to be able to stop those and Has proved itself pretty ineffective. So he will talk uh about Gaza and Palestine. I think he's due to speak after the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, so might respond to some of the whatever claims he's going to make uh in his own speech.
Also about Ukraine. You had uh President Zelensky and President Trump meeting here yesterday and uh Michel Martin is gonna foresquare put Ireland's support behind Ukraine again and talk about r kind of rebuilding the
