Now, we're going to move across the Atlantic because immigration enforcement officers have suspended most of their vehicle stops around the United States. Donald Trump's border czar, Tom Homan, says it's temporary, but it does follow the shooting dead of two men, six days apart, during traffic stops in both Texas and in Maine. Hilary McGann, journalist based in the United States, with her Instagram page, News by Hill, joins me now. Hilary, thank you for being with us this morning. So take us through what's happened over the course of the last week. Some people might have seen the aftermath certainly of the shooting in Maine. What has been happening?
Good morning, Clare. Well, yes.
Which fatal shootings occurred during traffic stops in Texas and Maine?
So in six days, within six days of each other, there was two fatal shootings by ICE agents of two men, one in Texas. That was the fatal shooting of a man called Lorenzo Salgado Arrujo. And in Maine on Monday morning, there was the fatal shooting of Juan Sebastian Guerrero. Separately in Florida, I don't know if you saw that another person was killed when they were trying to flee an ICE arrest and they were hit by a truck on Tuesday morning. And so there has been a significant increase in coverage around these ICE detentions when things had actually, in terms of from a news perspective, quietened down over the last few months. Just to walk it back just for a second, I'm conscious for our audience, you know, that don't keep up to date with the news in the US like I do every single day living in Boston.
ICE stands for US Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and it was founded after 9-11. So in 2002, the Department of Homeland Security was founded and ICE was the subsidiary agency of that. But as you will know, under the Trump administration, things have really ramped up in terms of arrests and deportations.
And so now we are in this situation where we have had numerous deaths happen since this ramp up began. What is the reaction now to what has happened in particular this week?
Yeah, well, just to your point there, according to Reuters, at least seven people have been killed in immigration enforcement operations since January of 2025, since this second Trump administration began. In terms of news coverage and reaction in the US, like many things at the moment, I have to say it kind of depends on the state that you're in. It's hard to talk about the US these days as polarized as it is. as one area really, to be honest with you. And I think when you look at these two shootings that happened in Maine and in Texas,

within six days of each other, you have to talk about the human outrage, but also the political situations in both states, in both states ahead of these midterm elections in November. There are neck and neck races in Texas for the Senate seat, James Salarico against Ken Paxton. And so there is, of course, a huge reaction to what is happening here. And in in Maine, you know, I spoke to you recently about Graham Plattner withdrawing from the race. Susan Collins is a Republican looking to be re-elected and you know she's a Republican so you know she toes the line very much but she's seeing how unpopular this is I mean this was a shooting that occurred in a low crime state at 7am on a Monday morning and so quite understandably there is complete outrage and I have to say here that of those two men that I've spoken about that have been fatally shot neither one were the intended target of the ICE agent so there is understandable outrage by this and Susan Collins is
calling for a further investigation. But yeah, it's interesting to see the impact that this has on states that have very contentious Senate races coming this November.
So what do you read into this decision by the Borders are to temporarily at least suspend vehicle stops?
Again, I go back to the politics care. You know, they're making it very clear that this is not a change in policy. It's a temporary pause. And so it'll be really interesting to see what happens in the coming weeks.
