The suspect in the murder of the former Conservative Minister Anne Widdicombe is believed to have driven 300 miles to her home armed with a wooden pole. A 28-year-old white British man was arrested in Rotherham in South Yorkshire in connection with her death. Henry Riley is a reporter and presenter with LBC and he joins me now with the latest. Henry, I think people haven't absorbed the shock of what happened to Anne Widdicombe after the announcement of her death on Friday. Bring us up to date with what's been happening in the investigation.
Of course. Well, I mean, just to sort of remind people of the timetable, Claire. So it was on Thursday that we it's believed that she was killed, although we now understand from police that on Wednesday at around 1230, she stopped responding to messages. um from producers so so found on Thursday and then it was on Friday that it was first reported and then we had an arrest of a 26 year old who's now been released without charge we now have a 28 year old man who's been arrested on suspicion of murder and in terms of the reporting which you referenced there Claire yes I mean we've had this um this story that's popped up in a fair few number of the newspapers this morning talking about a red car and an individual getting in that car with a large wooden pole and then driving hundreds of miles from Rotherham to Devon, which is where Anne Widdicombe lives in Hayter near...
near Dartmoor, so driving sort of around 300 miles, the suspect with, as we say, what's been described by neighbours as a foot-long stick on the morning of her death, again, as I say, believed to be taking place on Wednesday. And there's been this CCTV that first the Sun newspaper obtained showing this individual who's leaving Rotherham, a suburb of Rotherham, at around 7am in a red Vauxhall Corsa, The morning of her death. And then the sort of other update, Claire, really, is that police saying there's still nothing they've seen to suggest this horrific, tragic death is politically motivated and that they are not, despite the fact counter-terror police helped them with the arrest. Again, there's nothing to suggest it has any terror relation.
OK, and on that, there have been those who've been very critical of Nigel Farage, who now has additional security employed for reform MPs. I mean, he immediately came out and suggested that this was a terrible reflection on modern Britain, leading us to the conclusion that he believed that this was politically motivated. But there are those who are saying to him, you need to be careful about selling that narrative.
Oh, absolutely. And I mean, that is an additional tragedy to this, that there is now yet again a row and sort of wrangling, despite the fact that we really should be, A, focusing on the investigation and B, mourning someone like Anne Widdicombe, who, whatever your politics were, people came across Anne Widdicombe and she was a real force of nature. And in terms of that row that you said about Nigel Farage, as you say, he went to lay a wreath, he laid flowers at the home of Anne Widdicombe and gave a speech there where he was talking about the formidable person that she was, but did also allude to the fact that it was an indictment of modern Britain, as you say. Now, what we've had over the weekend is Reform UK sources saying that they are
are concerned by this. They're concerned that this is part of a wider issue against intolerance in Britain, for example. Police, though, maintaining that the investigation is ongoing and that they're keeping an open mind. They're not ruling anything out.
