Transcription

Chapter 1: What is the main topic discussed in this episode?

14.459 - 34.341 Sat

Back in on Canucks Central. It's Sat and Vic on Sports in the 650. Keep your thoughts coming in to our Dunbar Lumber text inbox, 650-650. If you want to grab a phone line, you can do so as well. 604-280-0650 or toll free, 1-888-275-0650. The Canucks, well, they moved down in the NHL Draft Lottery. They had the best odds.

0

34.361 - 50.2 Sat

They will be picking third in this year's draft unless we see some sort of a trade that moves them from the third spot and up. It's Satyar Shah, Vic Nazar coming to you live from the Shark Club. We're here until 6 p.m. and hockey. Playoff hockey is about to get going, is going right now. So if you want to commiserate, come and hang out with us.

0

50.44 - 68.416 Sat

Watch some playoff hockey, have some food, have some beverages. This is the spot to be, especially for the postseason as well. We're going to be joined by Shane Malloy at the bottom of the hour. We'll break down the NHL draft and what's next for the Canucks and what prospects we could be looking at with the third overall pick. But a lot of reaction, Vic. We'll get to the phone boards in a second.

0

68.456 - 74.301 Sat

What are the people saying on the Dunbar Lumber text inbox, 650-650? Because people are...

0

74.281 - 98.55 Vic Nazar

very very frustrated with how things have unfolded here today it's melting down the inbox yeah right now uh taking a look here dave and suri connection trade down focus on getting the ruck brothers bc boys from the soyuz uh we had the earlier conversation about using like political comments as well yeah uh winston churchill from silo success is not third pick failure is not second pick it is

98.53 - 123.599 Vic Nazar

The courage to get the first pick that counts. There are so many people hoping for pick number one. Obviously has not transpired, and they will be drafting third later next month as well. But a lot of commentary, people just furious at the current state right now. People renouncing their Blue Jays fandom because the Maple Leafs have won the draft lottery coming in the inbox here, 650-650.

124.119 - 127.603 Sat

Yeah, I know, I know. Mike Whistler can't even cheer for the Jays anymore.

Chapter 2: What were Jim Rutherford's reflections on the Canucks' draft position?

127.803 - 147.427 Sat

Yeah. No, I hear you. I hear people, like, I totally understand how they're feeling about things, especially with the gut punch here today. Let's go to the phone board, 604-280-0650 or toll-free, 1-888-275-0650. Let's go to Al in Nelson. Al, thanks for calling in. What are your thoughts here today after the Canucks drop in the draft lottery?

0

148.869 - 170.094 Al

Oh, fellas, just going to try and bring a little optimism to this here. You know, first off, I thought Jim's presser was really – You know, it brought a little more optimism, and I think it kind of brought home what I've been thinking. I think if given that McKenna's going to go first and the top three being set, you know, we've got a lot of mixed opinions on that. And Jim's right.

0

170.795 - 187.339 Al

We don't know who's going first or second. We don't know who's going to fall to us in third. So it's like we were gunning, you know, we were coming down for this spot for like the last two or three months. So, you know, if sucking and having a really bad season means you're guaranteed a top three, well, there you go. That's what you get first. having a really bad season like we had.

0

187.359 - 200.9 Al

But I want to make one more point, guys, is that like every year when we get around the trade deadline and we have these decisions to make, we're on the verge of making the playoffs. If it's worth bringing guys back and, you know, do we really want to keep trying to win when really it's a lost cause?

0

200.92 - 219.646 Al

It's like being the worst team in the league or it's like, you know, missing the playoffs or just missing the playoffs. It's like, you can have a really bad season and have even a little bit better season, but you're still, nobody's guaranteed that top pick. I mean, everyone's in the hunt for it. It's a lottery. So I've always believed, you know, I'm not a tanker.

219.866 - 230.261 Al

You root for your team and you want to put your team on the ice. These guys want to win. So moving forward, I'm going to keep doing what I do. It's like, I cheer for a winning team. I'm not a big fan of tanking.

Chapter 3: What insights did Shane Malloy provide about the NHL draft?

230.281 - 233.886 Al

And there you go. Finishing last doesn't guarantee anything. So good luck.

0

233.906 - 252.332 Sat

Thanks for the phone call. Appreciate it, Al. Thanks for the phone call. It was At the same time, I get what Al's saying, but you still guarantee the top three pick. If you end up, say, with the 10th worst record or 11th worst record, and you don't move up the draft, you miss the playoffs, you're picking 11th or 12th. Third is better than picking 11th or 12th. But I get the frustration because...

0

252.312 - 269.922 Sat

You know, you had hope the Canucks would get the lottery luck. And I'm not sitting here and saying you should go out and lose on purpose. But you're guaranteed picking third as opposed to having a chance, a small chance of picking first or second, but being mostly assured of picking later in that lottery range, which is anywhere from like, what, 9 to 12 to 13, right?

0

269.982 - 274.81 Sat

So, you know, I get it, though. When these moments happen, there's going to be frustration from the fans. I get it.

0

274.79 - 303.742 Vic Nazar

Yeah, and look, this is still going to be part of the process here of getting multiple strong players into the organization. It doesn't just start now. It continues. You need the next drafts to go your way. If you go to San Jose, who just won the draft lottery, they ended up picking Will Smith fourth. before they selected Macklin-Celebrini first. Then they get Misa.

303.822 - 326.411 Vic Nazar

Now they've gotten the second overall pick as well. So this is just part of an ongoing process. If you want this new era, this new rebuild... Finishing third, as I mentioned earlier, it's a small step for the rebuild, not the giant leap for the rebuild winning the lottery, but it is a step in the direction. It's just not first overall.

326.531 - 332.439 Vic Nazar

And I was bringing up a list of guys that have been drafted third overall historically.

Chapter 4: How might Gavin McKenna's draft position impact the Canucks?

332.459 - 353.614 Vic Nazar

If you want to look at some guys who have been there, Scott Niedermeyer was the third overall pick, Leon Dreisaitl, Henrik Sedin, although if you can debate second or third, however you want to shake that one out. You know, Jonathan Tays, Matt Duchesne, Pat LaFontaine, Jay Bomeester. There's been some strong players. Miro Iskanen here recently drafted third.

0

353.634 - 358.105 Vic Nazar

So there's been some strong guys at third. But, yes, ultimately it is not first overall.

0

358.085 - 377.352 Sat

No, absolutely not. And I get it. Now people are texting in to Al's point and saying, well, hey, listen, guys, we don't know for sure if Stenberg's going second overall, like Krez and others are mentioning as we've been talking about. The San Jose Sharks have a lot of needs, one of them being on the back end. Will they use this opportunity to solidify their defense?

0

377.372 - 382.819 Sat

And if that's the case, maybe sitting at third, you get the player that you want. All of those things can still be in play here, of course, right?

0

383.18 - 404.927 Vic Nazar

Also here recently is people texting in like, Tim Stutzla, Mason McTavish, Adam Fantilli, Beckett Seneca here recently, Anton Frondell. So again, good players have gone three. Is it that draft class? We'll talk about that with Chain coming up here in just a bit. But I think the sting of losing out on number one is more about Toronto winning than it is about sliding down two spots.

404.947 - 408.291 Vic Nazar

Because I think a lot of people knew, hey, the reality was you could slide down two spots.

408.391 - 420.041 Sat

No, that's how I feel too. I can't believe the Leafs actually won. It's just... Anyways. All right, let's go to Wes in Surrey. Wes, thanks for calling in. What are your thoughts here tonight with the Canucks picking third overall?

421.603 - 440.37 Wes

Yeah, as disappointing as it was to not getting third overall, I think I was more horrified with Jim's press conference there. There were a couple of key points that he made which really confirmed my thoughts with the ownership and where this organization is going. So one thing he said that...

Chapter 5: What skills does Chase Reid bring to the Canucks organization?

440.823 - 460.724 Wes

The rough part of the rebuild is over and we're looking at the upswing. So it seems like, well, we all know that the ownership is already looking at trying to make the playoffs again and not even mentioning about being a contender for the Cup, but going back to the playoffs. I know the philosophy of, hey, let's just get in there and anything can happen.

0

461.304 - 483.665 Wes

And also the second part you mentioned was the fact that, oh, this is a game changer of a draft that we can really hit something. Yes, I know he's saying that we could actually get a lot of good players. He's right. However, it doesn't seem like anywhere in his press conference that they're actually looking to rebuild for a couple of more years where they're actually focusing in on that.

0

484.046 - 506.112 Wes

And the fact that the leaks of their drafting period, him coming in as somebody who would actually... trying to make the playoffs, it's the same cycle over and over. That's a lot more frustrating than getting third overall. And to your guys' point, there's a lot of good players. I mean, even Quinn Hughes was at number seven, and I think he's the best player in that draft year.

0

507.335 - 512.224 Wes

That's not as disappointing as getting a bad GM and just going back to Jim Benning 2.0.

0

512.727 - 526.062 Sat

Yeah, I hear you. Thanks for the phone call. And I think that's the fear that people have throughout this whole process to the point that Wes was making is that whoever they hire is going to try to expedite this process and that they're going to look at it and say, hey, we're not that far away. Now, Jim kind of gave...

527.088 - 552.555 Sat

bit of an open-ended timeline he said maybe two or three years maybe longer and then he tried to say i'm not going to tie myself to a certain timeline 100 in terms of where things are going to be going but that's kind of where um things are at but that's going to be the skepticism until we see who gets hired and until we see how they execute the plan there's going to be some level of cynicism about whether the organization is willing to take the hard road and take the path that's necessary to get better because the thing is to the point

552.535 - 566.6 Sat

you might get the best player in the draft at number three because you never know how these drafts unfold. And we've seen that happen in the past. It's a hard pill to swallow right now because the sense is Gavin McKenna is going to be a special player first overall. You're not getting your chance of getting that star-level player.

566.94 - 575.816 Sat

But it's going to take years for us to truly know what's going to be coming out of this draft. The bigger question is going to be, are you going to get this rebuild right? And that's the point that I think Wes was trying to get at.

575.836 - 594.54 Vic Nazar

Yeah, I'm curious too. The commentary from Rutherford there talking about the rough patch and rock bottom, is that a projection of like, hey, 58 points is not something that we should be trying to do repeatedly? We had the call earlier about not being tankest, right? Is that the comment?

Chapter 6: How does the Canucks' draft strategy affect their future?

606.333 - 619.773 Vic Nazar

70 points is well enough to put you in a spot for 32nd, but it's the vagueness of a comment like rough patch. Because it was so bad this season.

0

619.893 - 637.577 Sat

It was, and I think that's the thing, and it kind of alludes to it being rock bottom, and somebody texted in as well and said, that's not what J.R. Bo from Burnaby says, that's not what J.R. said at all. This one says, Jim said that some candidates said that to him, not him, in terms of what people actually mentioned.

0

637.597 - 653.683 Sat

So I understand when it comes to the breakdowns and all this sort of stuff, and you're listening to it, and I know people are very frustrated with what's happening, but I understand the point that he made was we've hit rock bottom, we're building up from it. You know how I feel about rock bottom? Because you never know what rock bottom truly is.

0

654.084 - 656.327 Sat

It can get lower, things can always get worse to some extent.

0

656.707 - 658.029 Vic Nazar

There's no cap on misery is your term?

658.229 - 679.131 Sat

There's no cap on misery. Unfortunately, I wish there was, but there isn't. But that's the thing here, right, in terms of how things might go. we're going to find out by next week who the GM is going to be. I know the pure Dorian thing is what really, uh, set people ablaze here today, the past 24 hours. Uh, let's take one more phone call. Let's go to Austin where we have Vima on the line.

679.151 - 681.314 Sat

Vima, what's going on? What are your thoughts here tonight?

682.415 - 698.034 Vima

Hey, what's going on guys? Uh, you know, first of all, it's things that, uh, Toronto obviously got that first. Um, you never want to hear that. And then with San Jose and their cupboards being so over full, it's also another sting. Um, you know, after a season that we had.

698.074 - 717.945 Vima

But, you know, thinking about the third overall pick, maybe it's a little worse that we start building out from defense, you know, getting a guy like Chase Reed at number three or something like that. You know, the D-line is looking pretty stacked out and building from that end out and then hopefully capitalizing on a number one pick next year, you know, or number two or something like that.

Chapter 7: What are the implications of the Canucks' new GM search?

722.669 - 742.737 Sat

Yeah, I hear you. Thanks for the phone call, Vima. Appreciate the thoughts. And, you know, keep your thoughts coming in to our Dunbar Lumber text inbox, 65650. A lot of reaction as well. Tony the Nose says, did a quick Google search. The last time the Leafs missed the playoffs was 2016. That year, they won the draft lottery and chose Matthews.

0

743.594 - 756.53 Sat

And yeah, they missed the playoffs this year, and they end up picking first overall pick Gavin McKenna. History repeats itself. Technically, they missed the playoffs in the bubble playoff here because they lost the play-in, but it's still a playoff round technically. But yeah, they didn't get the lottery luck that year.

0

756.77 - 777.975 Vic Nazar

Anything else you see in the text inbox before we hit the break? Man, I'm struggling to keep up in the inbox. A lot of support for trading down as well. from three to a spot where you can start accumulating draft picks as well. That's also part of this rebuild now, right? This is now a slower process.

0
0

778.977 - 788.772 Vic Nazar

Right? The first overall pick would expect you to be in the lineup next year. That's not going to happen. If it's Caleb Mahotra, if it's D-Man, you're waiting a year. In this...

789.764 - 808.87 Vic Nazar

plan now do you start to say okay we need to prioritize high in assets continually yeah and as we've talked about layered and stacking these things up so if you're trading down three spots five spots six spots do you start looking at getting you know 20 28 picks and beyond here to start really loading this up for Vancouver

808.85 - 824.842 Sat

Yeah, 100%. So we'll go through all this. We're going to talk to Shane Malloy on the other side to get his thoughts on where the Canucks are picking a third overall, their GM search, and the strength of this draft. Can we get some positive takes on the fact that Canucks are picking third? Is it as bad as people think?

Chapter 8: What factors might influence the Canucks' draft decisions?

824.862 - 828.529 Sat

Could it be a lot better? We'll get to that and more, and that's next on Canuck Central.

It's Satin Big coming to you live from the Shark Club. Canucks picking third overall.

0

864.773 - 881.408 Sat

Did not get the top two picks. That's Toronto Maple Leafs with the first overall selection. And the San Jose Sharks picking second. The Canucks looking to sit there at number three. So let's welcome in our next guest. It is Shane Malloy, Hockey Prospects Radio. And one of the top guys breaking down the draft. Somebody we've been talking to quite a bit.

0

881.869 - 893.64 Sat

And Shane, we need you to help talk us off the ledge after the Canucks fail to get. Talk you off the ledge. You're taking it way harder than I am. Talk me off the ledge after the Canucks got no draft lottery luck yet again.

893.66 - 920.138 Shane Malloy

I think you guys are going to be fine. So let's look at this scenario of what Toronto potentially could do. So what are their needs? They need to pacify Austin Matthews. They need somebody to play with him for a long period of time. He needs a wingman now that he no longer has Mitch Marner. So who fits that? most appropriately in the short term.

920.799 - 945.034 Shane Malloy

Not five years from now, not three years from now, but tomorrow and the next year. Because his contract's going to be ending soon. So what's going to convince him? Who's ready to play now with Auston Matthews and can play a more complete game on a line with him going into next year? The answer is Ivan Stenberg. At this time, he is...

945.183 - 973.941 Shane Malloy

more ready to play with Austin in that scenario, in that situation, than Gavin McKenna is. I'm not saying that McKenna isn't going to be a better offensive player long-term, but the Toronto Maple Leafs management needs a win right away. And part of it is to get the best player that they possibly can, but the other factor you have to look at is how do they retain their talent

974.174 - 1002.78 Shane Malloy

top two players, offensive players in Matthews and Nylander and keep them happy. Well, number one thing you can do is make Auston Matthews happy. But then you also have a Swedish, you know, top end person in Matt Sundin who's going to be able to mentor Stenberg in that respect. And then Nylander is going to be there to help him. So if that scenario works, now you have San Jose
