What does it feel like when a dream career no longer feels aligned?
What do you do when you reach the career you worked decades for and realize it might not be the life you want long term? In this episode, former concert cellist Kate Kayan shares what happened when she stepped away from a world class music career and began redefining success. We talk about identity shifts, the pressure of external expectations, and how small steps can help you move toward a career and a life that actually feels aligned. Are you ready? Let's dive in.
Welcome to Career Growth for Working Women. If you're feeling tired in a way rest alone won't fix, or successful on paper but unsure what's next, you're not broken. You're not alone. I'm Shannon, a promotion and compensation coach, and this space is about helping women grow their careers with clarity, confidence, and sustainability, not pressure or hustle. Take a breath, settle in, and let's talk about what's really going on beneath the surface. Hello and welcome to the show. My guest today is Kate Kayan, and her career path is one that many high achievers may quietly relate to. Kate spent years as a professional concert cellist performing with world-class ensembles and appearing in major concert halls.
From the outside, it looked like she was living the dream she had worked towards for decades. But like many ambitious professionals, Reaching that level of success eventually raised a different set of questions. Questions about identity, purpose, and what comes next when the life you built no longer feels fully aligned. During the pandemic, Kate used the pause to reassess her path and eventually transitioned into leadership, writing, and coaching. Today she works with thoughtful professionals who are navigating similar moments of change, helping them re- to find success and move into their next chapter with clarity. Kate, welcome to the show. I'm so glad you're here.
Thank you, Shannon. It's great to be here. We've already been having a great time, guys. So this is gonna be a fun conversation.
Yes. Okay. So you spent years building a successful for career as a musician. And then but then you started to notice that that version of success maybe wasn't fully aligned with what you were feeling. Walk me through that moment, those moments.
Yeah. I mean, I started playing the cello when I was four and a half, right? I mean, we start young. And I and I did love it, right? So this is not like, oh, sh her parents forced her to. No, I loved it and I was I was good, apparently. I was talented. I had a lot of really wonderful experiences.
Why do many professionals feel socially discouraged about leaving a successful career?
And I wanted the dream. I wanted to be a concert cellist. I wanted to play on all the big ha you know, all the big stages with all the big orchestras and All of these amazing things, Grammys and the works. And then I was doing that. And I was in my thirties, late thirties, very early forties, and I was like, you know what? Okay, but am I gonna do the same thing for the next thirty, forty years? And I had a lot of colleagues who were like, Yes, there's nothing else I wanna do more for the next thirty, forty years. And I'm like, I I think I'm interested in doing some other things, like something else. And I didn't want to do it more. Like you know the I didn't you know, what was next? I didn't want to be the best cellist in the world because as fun as that title sounds, that title also comes with
performing every single weekend of your life and kind of being a slave to it. Like that title owns you.
Right.
And I was much more interested in in having a bit of a life. And uh I didn't see a way to do both. And so yeah, I um I toyed with the idea of stepping away and everybody told me I wasn't allowed to. Yeah. Not allowed to. I was like I wasn't asking permission, but wow, okay. Uh Yeah, it's not just it's just something that's not done in the in the music world, right? You like you don't step away. If you've achieved what everybody wanted to achieve, you don't say, oh, actually no thanks. So people didn't really know what to do with me and I felt a little bit stuck, honestly. But I'd like to think that eventually I would have made exactly the same decisions.
