Chapter 1: What inspired Carlos Brathwaite to run for a director position in Barbados Cricket?

0.773 - 45.946 Kimo Roach

This podcast is part of the Sports Social Podcast Network. This is Kimo Roach, and I listen to the Caribbean Cricket Podcast.

0

45.966 - 58.293 Machel St Patrick Hewitt

Yes, yes, yes, ladies and gentlemen, welcome back to another edition of the Caribbean Cricket Podcast. I'm on half the Caribbean Cricket Podcast, Mashal St. Patrick Hewitt. And back, people have been saying to me, where's Santolki? I just had to wait for his dial-up Wi-Fi to get working.

0

58.815 - 60.863

Ha ha ha! He's back.

0

61.263 - 63.648 Machel St Patrick Hewitt

He's back. Santoki, I'm back in London. How you doing?

0

64.089 - 67.716 Kimo Roach

Yeah, all good, Mash. Paid my bills off, got the Wi-Fi ready. I'm back again.

Chapter 2: How does Carlos Brathwaite view the current state of West Indies cricket?

67.776 - 86.832 Kimo Roach

Mash, good to see you back from Florida. You came back with the 1W. That was all you asked for, and destiny proved to be correct there. You got the 1W. Unfortunately, your trip ended with another L, but at least you got the 1W. in what has been a summer mash of Ls for West Indies, you know, across Test cricket, ODI cricket, T20 cricket.

0

87.273 - 105.625 Kimo Roach

And you've been fortunate enough to catch a few Ws, you've seen a few Ls, and it's been an exciting summer for you. And we've got a guest on mash who, you know, not only has had to witness the Ls that West Indies have taken, but unfortunately for him, he's also a Manchester United fan. I believe, based on his social media posts.

0

105.946 - 107.628 Machel St Patrick Hewitt

A big one, you know, a massive one.

0

108.049 - 128.74 Kimo Roach

It's been a couple of years of elsewhere following Guest Smash, but in all seriousness, Mash, you know, West Indies International gave us one of the most iconic moments in the 2016 World Cup and in more recent times has been a great commentator and analyst on all media platforms covering West Indies cricket. So without further ado, do you want to introduce our special guest on for today's episode?

0

128.922 - 141.312 Machel St Patrick Hewitt

Yeah, you've done a fine job in giving people the clues of who it is. And I don't need to say anything further because it is, of course, none other than remember the name Carlos Braithwaite. Carlos, how you doing?

Chapter 3: What challenges does Carlos see in bridging the gap between junior and senior cricket?

142.355 - 167.822 Carlos Brathwaite

All good, all good, reeling from the licks that I get from Man United so far already, so I know how this interview will go. But no, it's been good to watch the podcast grow. We've met off-air and in real life, IRL as the young people say. So yeah, it's been good to watch the growth of the podcast and keep doing what you're doing.

0

168.612 - 185.516 Machel St Patrick Hewitt

Most definitely. And listen, Carlos, let's jump straight into it. Obviously, you're in Trinidad. So actually, to give people a heads up, we assume that you're in Trinidad because you're going to be doing comms on ODI 1 and 2 for sure. Yeah, right.

0

185.636 - 212.621 Machel St Patrick Hewitt

But you're not going to be doing comms on ODI3 because for those people who don't know, I'm fairly certain any cricket aficionado in Barbados definitely knows. But for our wider audience who don't know, Carlos is actually in the midst of an election campaign, as it were, because Carlos on the... 12th of August 2025, there's going to be elections for the BCA.

0

213.121 - 236.082 Machel St Patrick Hewitt

And when I looked through the list, Carlos, it said that running to be one of the three directors, there's three positions for directors within the BCA. And when you run down the list of names, you see Dr. Rudolph Allain, Winston Haynes, Kamal Springer, Henderson Wallace, Dr. Roland Toppin. And then there I see Carlos Brathwaite as well.

0

Chapter 4: How does Carlos propose to improve cricket facilities in Barbados?

236.102 - 258.672 Machel St Patrick Hewitt

So Carlos, Let's start straight there. What inspired you? And do you know, I respect you, Carlos, for this, because a lot of people talk about cricket in the West Indies, and there's so much to be said, and there's so much that everybody always wants to chime in and say, do this, do that. But you've effectively put your money where your mouth is, because you're actually running for a position.

0

258.992 - 259.753 Machel St Patrick Hewitt

What made you want to do it?

0

260.414 - 280.026 Carlos Brathwaite

I hope it don't cost me too much money. LAUGHTER But no, I think just like what you said, regularly you have conversations. Obviously, you know, being a commentator, you have to keep your ear to the ground, follow the game and be able to call it and, you know, spot trends and that type of thing.

0

280.686 - 304.347 Carlos Brathwaite

And I've loved wrestling cricket as a player, but I think stepping into the commentary box, it actually... I wouldn't say rekindle because the love and the passion was never lost, but I think because they have no control over what's happening on the field now, they feel as though the passion is there as much as it was playing. And in some instances, it even feels like it's burning brighter.

0

304.827 - 318.921 Carlos Brathwaite

So just having conversations, and funny enough, it's been four years now I've been doing commentary, and it feels like a long time. And you get into certain conversations with people about what can be done differently.

Chapter 5: What insights does Carlos share about the murky world of T20 franchise cricket?

318.901 - 342.776 Carlos Brathwaite

And then someone made the statement to me that you have the plot, but you're not close enough to influence change. We want you to be an admin type of thing. I mean, everybody see the helmet lash, everybody know the passion that I have for cricket. And I'm one of those persons that if it not working, I happy to walk.

0

344.558 - 361.395 Carlos Brathwaite

So my hesitation in the past has always been so many times you have conversations with people that are actually in power and you make certain suggestions and it feels as though it falls on deaf ears. And over the last few months or so,

0

361.375 - 387.957 Carlos Brathwaite

i think i started to be a little bit more open-minded around maybe it isn't that they don't want to influence change maybe they can't for whatever reason there may be a limitation um so then my thing was can i get in then and see what the limitations are what's holding wrestling cricket back obviously only from a local standpoint in Barbados at the moment but with a view of

0

387.937 - 405.861 Carlos Brathwaite

making Barbados cricket strong. I think we are a really good place where all of our junior teams are champions, if not all majority of them, and they're doing really well. And there's always been that deficit between under 19 cricket and senior team cricket. So can we create a system where

0

405.841 - 422.683 Carlos Brathwaite

On the 19 level, you're going into a functioning system that prepares you for the rigours of first class cricket. And then we always say how bad our first class cricket is. So then you need to be prepared even better from first class to international. So we start to build some bridges.

Chapter 6: What are the financial challenges faced by players in franchise cricket?

423.424 - 451.828 Carlos Brathwaite

And one of the things that I am passionate about is an exchange of talent, information and process. The Samar Holder documentary went viral, went work with Shabazz, Shabazz Chaudhry, Speed Camp. And he's someone I have a lot of time for. Him alongside Naeem Amin, who I met at IPO as a coach.

0

451.808 - 474.205 Carlos Brathwaite

Naeem has done thesis on fast bowling comparison between fast bowling and javelin throwing Shabazz has written a book on fast bowling so these are guys that are accomplished and they know what they're speaking about Shabazz loves a little bit more numbers than Naeem does Naeem a little bit more old school and I just think that for our culture

0

474.573 - 493.105 Carlos Brathwaite

Shabazz is really important with the intensity that he wants to work at. And I think Shabazz Holden left here a boy, came back a man. This is probably two years now. His sleep is still being trapped by Shabazz to this day. There's another young guy, Jaden Roberts, who went this summer.

0

493.085 - 518.62 Carlos Brathwaite

And I would like to firm up that relationship and just say, you know, how can we get a coach now to accompany them? So no longer are we only sending a player on their own dime, but can we get a coach to go and experience how he does his work, why he does his work? He has a team, so it's not only him, it is Jop that worked with Brett Lee, is this massage therapist and nutritionist.

0

518.6 - 537.521 Carlos Brathwaite

I don't know if we have the money to bring that into our cricket right away, but I have experienced this is what the guys at county level do day in, day out. So when you see a guy on the 19 level as an Australian or Englishman versus a guy on the 19 level as a West Indian, the talent is neck and neck.

Chapter 7: How can knowledge transfer improve the development of young cricketers?

537.541 - 556.588 Carlos Brathwaite

But then they get 23, 24, and the professionalism takes them so much further past our players that it feels like every year we're falling further and further behind. That is a long story, but for me, it is can I get in and be close enough to try to influence some change?

0

557.412 - 574.417 Kimo Roach

Yeah, I think that's a really good point, Carlos. We've talked about on the podcast exactly what you said. At under-19 level, we see it at World Cups or West Indies or at regional level, really talented players, and a lot of them just go off the radar. We see them make their first-class debut at regional level when they're 26, 27, and you're wondering what's happened to these guys in between.

0

574.978 - 586.255 Kimo Roach

In your opinion, let's talk about from a Barbados regional standpoint, what have been the limitations or what has prevented being able to bridge that gap? Is it purely financial or is there more to it?

0

586.91 - 609.357 Carlos Brathwaite

I think a lot of it is financial because as much as we don't like to believe it, money makes you worry. So if we talk about facilities, if you've got more money, the potential is there to have better facilities. But my thing is, are we using our facilities to the best that we can? And, you know, just after COVID, I was trying to use the gym

0

609.522 - 632.057 Carlos Brathwaite

to stay in shape, was playing a lot more then, and I couldn't use the gym for about a month. And compared that to when I was in England, coming back from injury, Birmingham Bears, our workshop, called Great Calvin, made me captain of the T20. And I was able to go up to Birmingham three days a week before the season start and be in there 7 a.m.

Chapter 8: What is the future vision for cricket in the Caribbean according to Carlos?

632.137 - 655.525 Carlos Brathwaite

every day. By the time the team gets it at 9 a.m., I then do two sets of training, physio, and you're now ready to be a part of the team and do team stuff. So with the facilities that we have at Kensington Noble, can we have pitches that are always ready? And always ready don't necessarily mean freshly prepared every day. There may be a day that you want to replicate a fourth day track.

0

655.545 - 675.507 Carlos Brathwaite

So the pitch is not as well prepared as a first day pitch. But there's a level of planning that has gone into it to assure you batting day one stuff today. So the ball will be swinging around, maybe a little bit of bounce, whatever. But then there will be a day within that training block where we're batting on a third day, fourth day pitch.

0

675.487 - 698.305 Carlos Brathwaite

might be there you're chasing they might be there you're saving the game that type of thing so can we use our facilities better i personally think that we can get a little bit more from the contracted players as well um there was a time that i used to pick up one of the contracted players who lived really close to kensington and we would go half hour to use the gym 5 30

0

698.285 - 724.596 Carlos Brathwaite

a.m or mornings and there was nothing happening at Keynes Internovel at that point in time for him as a contracted player to better himself now if you pay up the money to contracted players you get the players to work for the money and not in a bad way where you're driving them like slaves but why try to slab everything into one month before the four day when you got 12 months in the year

0

725.032 - 749.566 Carlos Brathwaite

This is a full-time job now, so I want you in that County Noble from Monday to Friday. You play cricket, club cricket, on Saturday and Sunday, or Monday and Friday. Let's say it's a fastballer. You bowl two days on Saturday and Sunday. I'm not going to be ridiculous to say come in on Monday and bowl 10 or 10 over spell. No, but you can come in. This is your office. Come into the office.

749.586 - 772.321 Carlos Brathwaite

Let's have a conversation about how we can, right, with some of the plans that you work to, some of the players you bowl to, some of the fields you bowl to. Because it's club cricket, yes, and first class is a step up, but it will be things that can be pushed from club cricket into first class cricket. And all of a sudden, then you start to build a level of awareness with our player.

772.642 - 791.063 Carlos Brathwaite

One of the things that we always say is, oh, our cricketers mature later. But why do they mature later? Because that knowledge exchange comes a lot later. It's almost like they have to experience it. And I heard Shamsi say, when he broke into the South African team, Imran Tahir took him under his wing. They sat next to each other. They ate together.

791.744 - 803.537 Carlos Brathwaite

And Imran Tahir made a statement to say, look, he's learned what he's learned. No, I think he was 36 or whatever. And Shamsi was probably 26 at the time. And he was like, I don't want you to wait.

808.225 - 822.426 Machel St Patrick Hewitt

Whilst we wait for Carlos to come back, obviously that was the other directors in Barbados trying to shut down Carlos. The other directors are trying to shut you down, Carlos. Free Carlos, man.
