It's time to turn off the lights and turn on the dark. Chilling Tales for Dark Nights.

Good evening and welcome to Chilling Tales for Dark Nights. I'm your host this evening, Steve Taylor. Tonight's story follows a man who has spent years chasing altered states of consciousness in search of new experiences, deeper truths, and even stranger horizons. When Tim and his closest friends embark on a journey to Peru for an ayahuasca retreat high in the Andes Mountains, he expects revelations, enlightenment, and perhaps a glimpse beyond the boundaries of ordinary perception. What he finds instead is something far more disturbing. Settle in, dear listeners, and dim the lights. The show is about to begin. Without further ado, I present to you, from author and performer Nicholas Goroff, produced by Felipe Ojeda, with original music by Nicky McSorley, The Psychonaut.

It was to be the best vacation in history. A gift purchased for his birthday by his closest friends, Tim was ecstatic at the notion of such a new experience. With the small cadre that was his tribe, he had booked his flight, purchased the necessary boots, canteen, and other assorted hiking and camping gear that would be necessary. and had been packed and ready to go for well over a week before they were set to depart. Beyond a mere reprieve from the dull routine of his workaday world, this southern excursion, Tim hoped, would be a life-changing affair. they were bound for peru and specifically to the andes mountains where after what he understood would be a somewhat challenging hike through the dense jungle forest and up along the steep slopes of the mountain range they would arrive at the small retreat

Unlike most tourist traps, however, where massages, spa days, beaches, and cool ocean breezes were on offer to help with relaxation, this retreat would be somewhat different, for this retreat was meant more for opening the mind than rejuvenating the body. Tim was a DJ and electronic musician by trade. His days were mostly filled with making tracks, which he would play at the various parties, bars, or clubs he would book. And when not working, Tim could typically be found with either a bong or video game controller in hand, provided he wasn't sleeping the day away. He was what would commonly be referred to as a psychonaut, which was in reality simply a euphemism for one who enthusiastically imbibes hallucinogenic substances, often under the auspices of expanding their consciousness.

Though Tim quite often liked to claim that his dalliances with LSD, psilocybin mushrooms, mescaline, and a variety of as-of-yet-unnamed research chemicals were a matter of broadening his mind, such were in point of fact more recreational than therapeutic, or genuinely experimental. Tim enjoyed taking his mind to new and odd places, and in a given week, he was more likely to be found under the influence of something than not. Fortunately for Tim, however, his generally nocturnal schedule and the nature and environment of his work as a rave DJ facilitated this lifestyle well. There was one week remaining until his sojourn to South America, or two gigs and a weekend as he tended to measure time by.

The retreat was to be an ayahuasca retreat, whereupon after a hike through the forest and a slight climb up the mountainside, he and his company would be greeted by a shaman and a handful of acolytes who would act as guides for the ceremonies to come. Ayahuasca, being possibly the world's most powerful lucidogen, was one of the few mind-altering substances of such a variety that Tim had yet to indulge in. Where might it take him, he wondered. What might he see? The program through which they were connected with the retreat maintained a rather strict set of preparations for those who wished to participate, which required a minimum of two weeks of abstinent sobriety, a strict diet devoid of refined sugars, processed fats or caffeine, and a balanced sleep schedule, none of which Tim engaged in, but all of which he promised he would.
