What makes Fernando Mendoza a college football icon?

A new year doesn't ask us to become someone new. It invites us back home to ourselves. I'm Mike Della Rocha, host of Sacred Lessons, a space for men to pause, reflect, and heal. This year, we're talking honestly about mental health, relationships, and the patterns we're ready to release. If you're looking for clarity, connection, and healthier ways to show up in your life, Sacred Lessons is here for you. Listen to Sacred Lessons with Mike Della Rocha on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.

This is Dr. Jesse Mills, host of the Mailroom Podcast. Each January, men promise to get stronger, work harder, and fix what's broken. But what if the real work isn't physical at all? I sat down with psychologist Dr. Steve Poulter to unpack shame, anxiety, and the emotional pain men were never taught how to name. Part of the way through the valley of despair is realizing this has happened, and you have to make a choice whether you're going to stay in it or move forward. Our two-part conversation is available now. Listen to The Mailroom on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your favorite shows.

This show contains information subject to, but not limited to, personal takes, rumors, not-so-accurate stats, and plenty more. What's up, man?

How did Indiana achieve a perfect 16-0 season?

Nav Green 1:09
This your boy, Nal Green, from the Broken Play Podcast. Look, it's the end of the season, the playoffs are here. But guess what? It ain't the end of your season. You can always tune in with Broken Play Podcast with Nal Green on the Black Effect Podcast Network. Not a team who ain't going to the playoffs. The Chiefs. It's time to rebuild. Listen to Broken Play with Nav Green from the Black Effect Podcast Network on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Chad Johnson 1:38
We got a very special guest joining us.
Fernando Mendoza 1:40
Elijah! What would they do, boy? Where you at, boy?
Elijah Sarratt 1:44
I ain't chilling in the crib right now.
Fernando Mendoza 1:47
Okay, okay, okay.
Chad Johnson 1:48
Over the course of his career, his time, Kirk Cignetti at James Madison, he had 239 catches, 3,650 yards, 44 touchdowns. And the 56-22 beatdown of the Ducks, I ain't never saw that much duck poop in a long time. I've been from the country, and I know about duck pawns. I ain't never seen that much duck poop spread out all over the field.

What impact did Mikail Kamara have on the national championship game?

Chad Johnson 2:12
Seven receptions, 75 yards, and two touchdowns. Elijah, let me ask you this. Watching you guys, it didn't start out the season. We had Elijah on early this year. I mean, DeAngelo Pons. We had him on. Took the play back. But watching you guys say like the last four to five weeks of the season. yourself, Becker, the other guys, you guys do a great job of high-pointing the football. You guys do a great job of catching the ball in your hands. Y'all don't drop ish. What do you contribute that, you know, Mendoza was dropping dimes last night.

What are the unique qualities of Indiana's quarterback, Fernando Mendoza?

Chad Johnson 2:48
But a lot of times, I mean, I mean, the guy got eight touchdowns and five incompletions. What would you attribute your success, you guys' success of catching the football at the rate at which you guys catch it?
Elijah Sarratt 2:59
Yeah, first, like you just said, my boy, my boy Fernando, he put that thing on the money every single time. My boy dropped down nine times out of ten. And then it's just the work we put in week in and week out for real, for real. Coach Shani, my receiver coach, do a great job emphasizing we bigger guys. So, you know, you use our body, use our hands, man. So nine times out of ten, corners are usually not as big as me. I don't come around someone who's same size as me all the time. Just using my hands, man, that's what makes me good. I pride myself on reaching out. Even if someone on me, I tell my quarterback, my receivers tell my quarterback, we're comfortable with making catches with guys on us. Give him a chance.
Elijah Sarratt 3:37
It's just that attitude. And then we get a lot of work in after practice on the jug.

How did Indiana's defense perform against Miami?

Elijah Sarratt 3:40
So really, really a testament to the work we put in.
Fernando Mendoza 3:43
Yeah. Hey, another thing I want to ask to most of the time when you play a team twice, especially in the same season, you're obviously you familiar with each other and what you guys like to do.
