Chapter 5: How does Jaxson Dart plan to utilize his bye week?

160.394 - 168.311 Shannon Sharpe

Jason Kelsey made some interesting comments about the difference between Shanahan offense and the West Coast offenses. Let's take a listen to what Kelsey had to say.

0

168.571 - 180.276 Unknown

I do think there's a reason. While there has been a lot of great offensive coaches that have come from the Shanahan tree and the McVay trees, not a lot of those has transitioned to the Super Bowls.

0

180.847 - 201.614 Unknown

And I think that if you look at largely the teams that have won Super Bowls over the last decade, most of them have been West Coast offenses that are pretty much grounded on a lot of the Bill Walsh and Andy Reid lineages or pro-style offenses. And I think part of that is the scheme can be great. But it's going to be really hard to win a Super Bowl with the coach out scheming.

0

201.794 - 214.933 Unknown

At the end of the day, most of the Super Bowls are won with quarterbacks and players on the field. Teams that operate on a drop-back pass more tend to win Super Bowls more because drop-back pass is more important in close games and at end-of-game situations.

0

Chapter 6: What questions were raised during the Q&A segment?

215.373 - 229.135 Unknown

And that's why I think the West Coast offense, while it's not as... you know, is as ridiculously interesting as some of the Shanahan principles and things. I think it probably translates when you have great players into more success at the end of the day.

0

230.577 - 243.356 Shannon Sharpe

Hey, I like I like that a little bit. I like what he's saying. Obviously, Shanahan system and the West Coast system. I think it all comes down to obviously having a combination of both, having a combination of great players. with the great quarterback.

0

243.918 - 262.099 Shannon Sharpe

Because if you have a great quarterback, regardless of the offense that you are running, whether it's Shanahan-like or if it's West Coast system, being able to manipulate that offense and knowing exactly what you're doing and having the right supporting cast, hell, anything is possible. Anything is possible.

0

262.159 - 269.366 Shannon Sharpe

It all comes down to the person at the helm who has the ball in his hands the most in his decision-making. That's what it comes down to at the end of the day.

0

Chapter 7: What are the implications of the media's portrayal of athletes?

269.686 - 289.204 Shannon Sharpe

Scheme is great. You know, tactics is great. The system you're running is great. Whether it be a Shanahan-style offense or whether it be the West Coast system offense. Hell, we've seen the West Coast system offense be successful. Think about how many teams that have a West Coast system that have won the Super Bowl. Um...

0

290.872 - 312.401 Shannon Sharpe

The thing, look, in Mike's system, the West Coast system, they really use the short passing game as their run game. The true West Coast system, the way Bill Walsh ran it, they never had a Terrell Davis. They never had a guy that could hit his head, that could run the ball like that. And if you go back and study, you look at Green Bay. Green Bay, they had Dorsey Levins.

0

312.702 - 332.445 Shannon Sharpe

If you go back and look at the West Coast, Very few teams have had a guy that could run the ball like we had with TD. And even though you go back and you look at the Broncos, even after TD, they had Mike Anderson and they had Ruben Drones and we had Clinton Portis and they had a number of guys, they weren't TD.

0

Chapter 8: How do the hosts reflect on the significance of their discussions?

333.947 - 355.625 Shannon Sharpe

And so if you look at now McCaffrey, you see what they're able to scheme and how they're able to run the ball with McCaffrey. And still, they still throw a lot. We didn't throw the ball that much to the running backs. That was my job, Ed's job, and Rod's, Foote's job, to do the leg work as far as the passing game.

0

355.646 - 379.809 Shannon Sharpe

Yeah, we threw a couple screens, but we weren't a great screen team like the 49ers are with Kyle, like they are with McVay. We were not a good screen team. We were a toss it, hand it, weak side zone team, stop it if you can. And then we're gonna play action off of that. We're gonna run boot, we're gonna run fullback slide, drag slide, we're gonna run overs. And we dare you to stop it.

0

379.829 - 395.913 Shannon Sharpe

You know what I do like too about the West Coast system, Monk? And for those that are in the chat to give you a different perspective, especially when it comes to soccer, I want you to think about the Barcelona teams, you know, the early days of Messi, when obviously they kill you with 100 passes, you know, tiki-taka, tiki-taka, tiki-taka, tiki-taka.

0

395.933 - 414.077 Shannon Sharpe

That's what I think about the West Coast system, you know, being able to have 14, 15, 17, 18 play goddamn drives and it's damn demoralizing for a defense because there's no way to stop you. Because you're always able to find the mismatch based on whoever it is at the helm controlling the ball and having the ball in their hands the most.

0

415.559 - 441.619 Shannon Sharpe

When it's done the right way, when it's done the right way, it's the most beautiful thing in the world. The most beautiful thing in the world to watch. But if you look at it, you look at Andy Reid was in that system. Andy Reid, you look at it because he came from Mike Holmgren. John Gruden, all those guys, Mariucci, all those guys was under Holmgren who came up on that system.

441.97 - 465.962 Shannon Sharpe

Mike went directly to San Francisco and got that from Bill Walsh himself. And so you see all the guys that came from Shanahan, Kyle Shanahan, McVay, all those guys, LaFleur, O'Connell, all those guys. And so you see a variation of it. They do a lot of, got their own, put their own spin on the no-show, but that's what it is.

466.322 - 471.048 Shannon Sharpe

But none of them has really had a guy that can run the football like a TD.

471.489 - 471.589

Yeah.

471.569 - 494.598 Shannon Sharpe

And so that's the only thing that's missing from the West Coast that I was in compared to what we see now. They throw a lot more, they throw a wave of the game has changed now. The game has changed now. So they're going to throw the ball more than we ran it. We ran more than we threw. Matter of fact, what is Mr. Campbell and the Detroit Lions? Is that not West Coast a little bit? I don't know.
