This case begins on December 27th, 2011 in Lake St. Louis, Missouri, which is a suburb of St. Louis. 42-year-old Betsy Faria has a long day ahead of her. She's battling stage four breast cancer, and she has a chemo appointment that morning in the nearby town of St. Peter's. Betsy lives 25 minutes away in Troy, but she stayed at her 74-year-old mother Janet's apartment that night to be closer to the appointment. Janet's snoring kept her awake, so she's already pretty tired, and the infusion is just going to make it worse. But at least she's going to have company today. Janet's close friend Bobby, who's known Betsy for most of her life, is visiting from out of state, and she plans to drive Betsy to her cancer center and sit with her during the hours-long chemo appointment.
They both know it's one of their last chances to talk. Two months earlier, Betsy's doctors told her that the cancer had spread and it was, unfortunately, time to put her affairs in order. Even so, Betsy chose to continue treatment, just hoping for a miracle or at least a little bit more time with her family.
