In the spring of 2020, a priest in Rhode Island was arranging a memorial mass for a man named Nicholas Aliverdian. Aliverdian was a bit of a minor local celebrity. Fifteen years ago, he'd led a dramatic campaign against the abuse and mistreatment of foster children and had exposed some pretty grim goings-on within the state. They loved that. Yeah. He was like, shh, as long as it's not here in the church. Now, Aliverdian had always been an eccentric kind of guy and his funeral requests were characteristically extreme. His widow was organising the whole thing over the phone from Switzerland, and her demands ranged from grand orchestral symphonies to making sure the state's top-ranking officials were all in attendance.
Father Bernard Healy was doing his best to accommodate. But, as he was pulling together the finishing touches to this mammoth ceremony, he received a phone call from a police officer. The officer told the priest that Nicholas Aliverdian was an international fugitive who was wanted in five states for a spree of sexual assaults and large-scale frauds. Father Healy was shocked, but there was more to come, because the officer then told him to cancel Aliverdian's Mass. Nicholas Alavardian wasn't dead.
He had faked his demise to try and escape justice. But they were on to him. And he was wanted for extradition by the FBI and Interpol.
