Code Story: Insights from Startup Tech Leaders

S12 E8: Satya Mishra, Waylit

Transcription

Chapter 1: What motivated Satya Mishra to start WayLit?

0.79 - 23.566 Satya Mishra

So the first MVP was basically Raj and I, Raj is my co-founder, doing the process manually. We met with our customers that are local St. Louis companies. And we sat down, this is a problem we're trying to solve. Is this something that seems interesting to you? And quite a few of them said yes. We do the tech side, we manage the HR, and then we partner with attorneys to do the cases.

23.887 - 43.757 Satya Mishra

And we found this attorney in St. Louis who was willing to work with us It's a little old school. It does everything over paper. We got the process running. We figured out how everything works. And then what we did was we took that and built it into a workflow in Django. I'm Satya Mishra. I'm the co-founder and CTO at Waylet.

This is CodeStory. A podcast bringing you interviews with tech visionaries. Six months moonlighting.

0

53.899 - 55.461 Satya Mishra

There's nothing on the back end.

0

55.922 - 58.546 Noah Labhart

Who share what it takes to change an industry.

58.566 - 60.109 Satya Mishra

I don't exactly know what to do next.

60.129 - 80.257 Noah Labhart

It took many guys to get right. Who built the teams that have their back. A company is its people. The teams help each other achieve more. Most proud of our team. Keeping scalability top of mind. All that infrastructure was a pain. Yes, we've been fighting it as we grow. Total waste of time. The stories you don't read in the headlines. It's not an easy thing to achieve, mind you.

80.277 - 104.119 Noah Labhart

Took it off the shelf and dusted it off and tried it again. To ride the ups and downs of the startup life. You need to really want it. It's not just about technology. All this and more on Code Story. I'm your host, Noah Labpart. And today, how Satya Mishra made a simpler way for you to handle immigration through faster filings, support, and visibility.

107.339 - 128.239 Noah Labhart

Today's episode is brought to you by .techdomains. And this one hits close to home. Back in 2016, I was building my startup and went hunting for that perfect .com and found next to nothing. So I did what every founder does, settled. Here's what I wish someone had told me. You're building a tech startup. Just get a .techdomain. It instantly tells investors and customers what you're about.

Chapter 2: How did Satya and Raj identify the immigration process problem?

1099.816 - 1116.636 Satya Mishra

We get unsolicited thanks from our employee customers, customers and their employees. They're like, oh, you guys are the best. And I wish we had worked with an immigration provider like this ever. And that's what brings us back to working on it so hard every day.

0

1119.097 - 1124.766 Noah Labhart

Satya, let's flip the script a little bit. Tell me about a mistake you made and how you and your team responded to it.

0

1125.767 - 1148.843 Satya Mishra

And the biggest mistake was hiring. So when we started hiring, operational work was getting rather large for a small team for us to handle. So we wanted to win. We went and hired some paralegal help to do the work and answering customers' questions, running the cases and such things. And unfortunately, as I was saying, the pace of work at a startup and a law firm are very different.

0

1149.444 - 1161.962 Satya Mishra

So that's like the biggest mistake that has caused the most heartache. And we now know to focus really well on somebody who's able to keep pace with the change and the pace of work as well.

0

1165.351 - 1174.467 Noah Labhart

Satya, this will be fun. Let's look towards the future. What does the future look like for Waylet, for the product, for the company, for your team, all the things?

1176.353 - 1198.756 Satya Mishra

So we're still focused on providing the best immigration service that our customers can find anywhere. And while it continues to grow, we hope to be one of the biggest names in immigration service that compete with the biggest names right now. And the biggest names in immigration service have been around for, what, 20, 30 years. And we're much newer, but we're growing.

1199.137 - 1205.263 Satya Mishra

And I think we're solving a real pain point. So we should be right there, up there with them in due time.

1206.509 - 1216.873 Noah Labhart

How are you integrating or utilizing some of the latest industry trends into the product? Maybe like talk about AI or LLMs or things of that nature. Tell me about that.

1218.035 - 1238.187 Satya Mishra

For the longest time, LLMs weren't going to add much value. I know everybody was, last year's trend was everybody was putting in a chat box in their Apple. Yeah, this is not really adding any value other than for the sake of where LLM. But I'm seeing some new opportunities this year with the improvements, especially with Opus.

Chapter 3: How does WayLit streamline the immigration process for HR teams?

1238.167 - 1265.895 Satya Mishra

4.5, 4.6, and OpenAI's GPT 5.2. And those things have changed the game where I can almost rely on them as much as I rely on a human to do the thing right. So we're looking to put in some intelligence in quite a few places where the LLM can do an assessment quickly, not necessarily give the answer to the customer because we still don't trust them to do the right answer.

0

1265.875 - 1281.518 Satya Mishra

But surface things quickly for our team to review so they can do things faster, more accurately, with more comprehensive overview of everything that's going on for that employee. Internally, we're, of course, using LLS for developing our code and all that.

0

1283.341 - 1289.47 Noah Labhart

Satya, let's switch to you. Who influences the way that you work? Name a person or many persons or something you look up to and why.

0

1290.158 - 1313.989 Satya Mishra

Well, the biggest influence would be my mom, I think. She didn't get to go to college, but she worked nights and weekends to get her degrees in undergrad and master's. And that's been my influence. You want something, you got to put in that hard work to get there. When the kids go to bed at night, I get back to work because I got a thing to get to.

1315.488 - 1328.721 Noah Labhart

Last question. So you're getting on a plane and you're sitting next to a young entrepreneur who's built the next big thing. They're jazzed about it. They can't wait to show it off to the world. And can we show it off to you right there on the plane? What advice do you give that person having gone down this road a bit?

1329.697 - 1354.776 Satya Mishra

The biggest thing I've found in business is the technology is good, but getting it in front of customers and making sure it's solving a problem for the customer is much more important. If you found a great big thing, go talk to a bunch of people and see how it solves their problem. And see how you can get it into more people's hands. Those are the biggest things when you're a new entrepreneur.

1354.756 - 1383.689 Noah Labhart

Yeah, I think those are fantastic things to point out. Well, Satya, thank you for being on the show today. Thank you for telling the creation story of Waylet. Thank you, Neil. Thank you for having me. And this concludes another chapter of Code Story. Code Story is hosted and produced by Noah Laphart. Be sure to subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or the podcasting app of your choice.

1384.651 - 1393.15 Noah Labhart

And when you get a chance, leave us a review. Both things help us out tremendously. And thanks again for listening.
