So the manipulation starts later, once you're already inside, and it moves slowly enough that you'd never get a single moment where you could look around and say, this is where it went wrong. And for India Oxenberg, the door was a class.
And the cult, Nexium, sold itself as a Self-help organization with personal development seminars, professional growth, and a community of ambitious people who seemed to have it all figured out. And India was only 19 when she walked into her first class, alongside her mother, the actress Catherine Oxenberg. And her mother would walk away, but India would stay for several more years, recruited deeper by actress Allison Mack. And brought into Dawes, a secret inner circle group within the Nexium organization. And it functioned as a master slave pyramid scheme, used blackmail punishments, and practice even branding. And India would also be abused by the man at the center of it all, the cult leader, the pathetic waste of oxygen, Keith Rainier.
But luckily, she would eventually. Get out with her mother's help. And now she spent the years since turning that experience into something useful. She's executive-produced the docuseries Seduced inside the Nexium Cult, which I highly recommend watching after this. And she wrote the memoir, Still Learning, and narrated the audiobook herself, which I also highly recommend listening to. And her poetry collection, which is so incredibly beautiful, from numb to normal, sits. With the slow part, the return to feeling after years of being controlled. And she speaks publicly about coercion and psychological manipulation and how it actually works and how ordinary it looks from the inside. And that's why I wanted to talk to her.
Because her story is a warning about seeing. Patterns, the isolation from people who knew you before, the information you handed over that becomes leverage later. The way the ask gets bigger by increments so small, you'd feel pretty dramatic refusing. And once you can see that, you start seeing it everywhere. In a relationship, in a job, in a friendship that slowly rearranged your life around someone else. I really feel like this interview can apply to anyone listening.
