In 1974, in the small town of Pocatello, Idaho, 12-year-old Jan Broberg was kidnapped by a man her family knew and trusted, a close family friend, a fellow church member, a man her parents considered family. And two years later, he took her again. And many people know the outline of this story from the Netflix documentary Abducted in Plain Sight, which left millions of Viewers asking the same question. How could this possibly happen? And the answer is grooming. Robert Birchtold, nicknamed B by the family, didn't just target Jan. He spent years methodically earning the trust, affection, and loyalty of her entire family, positioning himself so deeply inside their lives that by the time the abuse began, the people who loved Jan most couldn't see what was right in front of them.
And that's what makes her story so incredibly important and also incredibly uncomfortable because it wasn't a failure of love, it was a masterclass in manipulation, one that could happen to almost any family.
