In 1974, in the small town of Pocatello, Idaho, 12-year-old Jan Broberg was kidnapped by a man her family knew and trusted, a close family friend, a fellow church member, a man her parents considered family.
And two years later, he took her again.
And many people know the outline of this story from the Netflix documentary Abducted in Plain Sight, which left millions of
Viewers asking the same question.
How could this possibly happen?
And the answer is grooming.
Robert Birchtold, nicknamed B by the family, didn't just target Jan.
He spent years methodically earning the trust, affection, and loyalty of her entire family, positioning himself so deeply inside their lives that by the time the abuse began, the people who loved Jan most couldn't see what was right in front of them.
And that's what makes her story so incredibly important and also incredibly uncomfortable because it wasn't a failure of love, it was a masterclass in manipulation, one that could happen to almost any family.
And the documentary told her story in 90 minutes, shaped by strategic editing and framed for shock.
But this interview is different, and this is really why I wanted to.
Sit down with her.
Jan is so incredibly lovely and well spoken.
And I just wanted her to be able to tell her story in her way, and she does it beautifully.
She walks through how the grooming unfolded step by step and how each member of her family was targeted differently, and how she was abducted twice, and how she survived, and how she has spent her life since making sure other families can recognize.
What hers couldn't at the time.
And today, Jan is an actor, an author, a speaker, and an advocate.
And she produced the Peacock series A Friend of the Family based on her family story, and she founded the Jan Broberg Foundation, which supports survivors of childhood abuse on their healing journey and works to educate families and communities on preventing abuse before it happens.
