In November 2022, four University of Idaho students — Madison Mogen, Kaylee Goncalves, Xana Kernodle, and Ethan Chapin — were stabbed to death in their off-campus house in Moscow, Idaho. Bryan Kohberger, a criminology PhD student, was arrested six weeks later. Last summer, he pleaded guilty to all four murders and was sentenced to four consecutive life terms. On Monday, July 27th, he filed a petition asking a judge to let him withdraw that plea and go to trial — claiming he was "convinced to falsely confess" and telling the New York Times that "actual innocence is my truth."
