Corría el año 62 cuando la romana ciudad de Pompeya, al sur de la actual Nápoles, cuando un terrible terremoto dejó en las ruinas la ciudad. Su reconstrucción fue lenta y 17 años después aún proseguían las labores de reparación de los edificios, calles y templos. Fue justo en el año 79 cuando estallaría violentamente el Vesubio y sepultaría por completo la urbe y todos los habitantes que no consiguieron huir.
