Google's Quantum AI team has made a significant advancement in quantum error correction, as reported in a paper published in Nature. The team successfully demonstrated the ability to reduce the error rate of a logical qubit by scaling up the distance of the surface code, starting with a distance-3 grid – the smallest possible surface code, which uses a 3x3 qubit grid to form one logical qubit out of 17 physical qubits.
