Kindness and Empathy

I have three pillars that I try to practice professionally and personally: embrace discomfort, plan to fail, and be kind. The last one used to be "be nice", but I have recently revised it based on feedback from a friend. What is the difference between nice and kind? And what does that have to do with empathy?
