A reading from the letter of St. James. James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ to the twelve tribes in the dispersion. Greeting. Count it all joy, my brethren, when you meet various trials, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness, and let that steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.
If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives to all men generously and without reproaching, and it will be given him. But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind. For that person must not suppose that a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways, will receive anything from the Lord.
Let the lowly brother boast in his exultation, and the rich in his humiliation. because like the flower of the grass, he will pass away. For the sun rises with its scorching heat and withers the grass.
Chapter 2: What messages are conveyed in the letter of St. James?
Its flower falls, and its beauty perishes. So will the rich man fade away in the midst of his pursuits. Psalm 119 Before I was afflicted, I went astray. But now I keep your word. You are good and do good. Teach me your statutes. It is good for me that I was afflicted, that I might learn your statutes. The law of your mouth is better to me than thousands of gold and silver pieces.
I know, O Lord, that your judgments are right, that in faithfulness you have afflicted me, Let your mercy be ready to comfort me according to your promise to your servant. A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Mark. The Pharisees came and began to argue with him, seeking from him a sign from heaven to test him.
And he sighed deeply in his spirit and said, Why does this generation seek a sign Truly I say to you, no sign shall be given to this generation. And he left them, and getting into the boat again, he departed to the other side. What is the Lord saying to you today through these scriptures? What can you now say to the Lord in response to his word?
What conversion of mind, heart, and life is the Lord asking of you today? Spend a few moments in silence, resting in the presence of the Lord. Nourished by God's word, what is one specific way that you can go forth and make your life a gift for others? rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. Amen.
