Chapter 1: What led to Michael Voss's resignation as Carlton coach?
Well, emergency board time. It's over.
Chapter 2: How do Dan and Joey react to the breaking news?
It's over. Michael Voss is out of Carlton. After a long time coming. Should have it a long time ago. The board has spoken. And it's time to go. I mean... As a new era, ladies and gentlemen, a time is here.
Chapter 3: What does Voss's resignation mean for Carlton's future?
It's come. The moment that Carlton fans know and love so dearly and way too much. And that's getting the coach out of there. We're back.
Carlton have lost a real one.
They have. Michael Voss, as you all know by now, no longer the coach anymore. Did not expect that at 7 a.m. this morning. I did not see myself sitting here at 9 a.m. having a cigar in the mouth and bobbing bottles. But life works in mysterious ways. It really does. Now, I respect Michael as a person, for sure.
But I have been saying for the longevity of this podcast, for those who have listened for a long time now, I've said this guy cannot coach. Lovely person. Probably he banned one of us from functions and by association, two of us. But lovely person. Couldn't coach. And couldn't coach for a long time.
Chapter 4: What were the circumstances surrounding Voss's departure?
So it's 7 a.m. when the news breaks that Tom Morris dropped a Morris bomb saying that Michael Voss has decided to resign effective immediately. Now, did I think and read that as re-sign? Yes, I did. But then I worked out, oh no, he's resigned. He quit on us. That's not how this thing works. We're supposed to quit on you. And it's very smart by him.
I'll say very smart for him to say, you know what, guys, I'm not doing this. I'm going to take a little playbook. I leave out the goings playbook here. I'm going to leave you before you leave me. And you can't get sacked if you sack yourself first. I've always said that.
Chapter 5: How did the Carlton board influence Voss's resignation?
So up and about, up and about. Hard to go up to the Gabatoir and come back with a coaching job if you're a Carlton coach. It's happened to Dennis Pagan in 07 after they lost to the Gabba. Brett Ratton in 2012 lost to the Gold Coast Suns at Metricon, then lost his job. Now Vossi's gone up to Queensland and come back without a gig.
And we did say that. We did say that that would be the place where what a poetic finish it would be, that he goes up there where he started his career and then ends his career there. Yep. We thought that'd be a great, beautiful finish if there was a way for him to go out. And it does look better in the media when you do say that I left you before you leave me.
Yeah, it's a typical Daniel Gurange move. It's a smart move. It's a smart ā and it also means he gets the last laugh in this whole thing. So hearing from our sources, as you can imagine, the phones are hot, hot, hot, hot, hot. They're boiling hot.
Chapter 6: What are the implications for Carlton's coaching strategy going forward?
My iPhone's about to fucking blow up. They're hot. Did some calls, sent some messages out, said, hey, what's his plan? What happened there? Got the sources telling us that this very much was a thing where they said to him, it's not going to go your way. We're very happy for you to walk away from us. You can label it as a resign. You can coach your last game. Do you want to do that?
And then you put all the pieces together in the puzzle of how things looked in Brisbane where the first half was shocking and then they come back in a second half that was amazing and a lot of smiling, a lot of hugging. We heard that in the halftime rooms. There was a spray, but also it was closed off. And then the pre-huddle from Kripa.
where, you know, if you now look at it, you go, was he saying, guys, he has a half to go? We now know this. There's been an announcement that was made the day before, internally. Was there a thing where they say, we only play halves. We know that. We've got it the wrong way. Let's send this guy off with a half of a ball.
Chapter 7: How might the team dynamics change after Voss's exit?
Because it's interesting now that we're thinking about it because there was supposed to be a few catch-ups with some key people from Carlton the day before and they got, within the space of an hour, they got taken down and taken out. So it feels like it was a pre-planned resignation or sacking. Are you okay? Yeah, so the cigar went down the wrong hole.
Yeah. Yes, it was. Yeah, it does sound like that. Yeah. Yeah. So, again, you put all the pieces. Again, I'm talking about how things I should have probably put together a little bit sooner when the pregame function, a lot of the big board members were there. A lot of them were there. All of them were there, weren't they? Pretty much. Yeah. Pretty much.
Now, I'm not saying I don't have that power, but I did say in one of the functions, hey, I don't make those decisions. I'm not that powerful. But this is a club where, unfortunately, just the way that it is with Carlton and the big clubs in this league ā is that every season, the fans, the board, the players themselves expect that you win a flag or it's bust.
Chapter 8: Who could be the next coach for Carlton after Voss?
Rightly or wrongly, that's just the way it is and the way it's been for a very long time. There are those pressures that come with coaching a big club. And this guy did a lot. He did a lot of good stuff for this team, which I am forever grateful for. So in his...
career coaching Carlton he coached 104 games 50 wins 53 losses and one draw and somehow you look at that and if you look at the vibe of his whole coaching tenure it was a club and a coach that was so close to a premiership glory and at the same time miles away from doing anything, especially this season.
Well, two years ago, you would have, you would have been keen for him to resign when you guys were on top, top of the mountain.
Yeah.
And, uh, it's just, yeah, it's just, it's just a sad, sad way to go out because at the end of the day, he's a human and he does get laid on by the media, but it is a good result for Carlton. It's a great, yeah. For Carlton people, it is. The timeliness of this is strange, though. Do you feel like the timeliness of this is strange?
I mean, they've waited until, what, round nine, round ten, and they really could have done it in the off-season when they've got, like, a new brand new list, done their renovation or rebuild, whatever you want to call it, instead of wasting half a year.
Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, I think so. I think, you know, if you look at where Carlton is, they're 1-8. So the big thing about this whole season playing out was going to be we're already 1-8. The season is gone. What benefit do we get out of Michael Voss, who I'll use his full name now out of respect?
What do we get out of having Michael Voss as our head coach for the next 14 rounds or whatever it is this season? Is there any benefit there or is this more detrimental to the whole playing group and their mindset and trying to attract new talent? The big fish is Zach Butters. We're slowly turning into Port Adelaide Light. Graham Wright's there.
Ken Hinckley is now a coach that's probably on the market. Zach Butters is a big player who they have no doubt they want to go after. So does keeping Michael Voss there actually damage you more than Just by having him in a seat that's not his for next season.
