Coach, we appreciate you so much for joining us. What went through your mind when you saw him pick at number 29?
I mean, there's, well, first of all, the activity it's like buzzing, you know, because you had multiple teams that were either at the end of the beginning of the second round that we're trying to trade up to 29 or 30. Plus you had those teams late in the first round that were considered picking Alex. So it was, you know, Tara Street had just gotten picked a couple of picks earlier and then all the focus turned on Alex at his draft party. And it was, it wasn't as, chaotic as our bench when we beat Duke on that half court shot. But there was some pandemonium going on. But we had known for probably about a month that, you know, that the Kings were really, really targeting Alex. They, you know, they really loved the player and loved the fit.
You know, so this was, you know, this was an organization we had been talking about for a while.
And you said at one point, you will never coach a player like Alex again. That's a big statement. So I guess, why do you say that?
Well, because he has all of my best qualities and none of my horrible ones. You know, that's his obsession with basketball, you know, matches kind of this Hurley level of obsession, you know, only with a calm demeanor, you know, and more of a poised attitude. way of carrying himself in big moments. But just his championship approach every single day, his consistency, his durability, his accountability, his maturity and professionalism, At such a young age that has only elevated. And then you're also talking about a guy that has like skilled production, but then also like skilled production in pressure moments in the biggest games in college basketball, you know, in a game that translates incredibly well, you know, to be in college.
Like an excellent role player in the NBA that plays off of those one or two stud players that an organization has that's going to have the ball in their hands all the time. He's like mastered the art of being a championship level role player.
Wow. I mean, you say that too. And I think about, you know, the Kings get a cuff with the seventh pick. They also have someone like Sabonis who's such a good screen setter, you know, a master in that DHO game.
