Without a functional LAMP2 gene, lysosomes cannot fuse with autophagosomes, leading to a buildup of cellular debris. The Impact: This manifests primarily as hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, skeletal muscle weakness, and intellectual disability. The Cardiac Threat: For many patients, especially males, the disease progresses rapidly toward end-stage heart failure or sudden cardiac death, often requiring heart transplants at a young age.
